• Should I upgrade my iPod 8GB to IOS4?

I heard that IOS4 is pretty bad and slow for iPod Touch 8GB since it has the insides of last gen's iTouches. Is this true? Should I not download the IOS4?
I've got it running (with Multitasking and backgrounds, no less... Gotta love the JB community) on my 8GB 2nd gen. It's snappier than before. If it's slow when you first upgrade, format it as a new iPod, and then sync all your stuff to it. It works perfectly fine. You'll need to jailbreak it to make the most use of it, though, since the 2nd gen only gets folders and Aids.
there's pretty much no benefit that I've seen. No wallpaper, no multitasking. Just a different bottom UI thing and new calculator link.

Multitasking (Apple's, not Backgrounder, mind you. Although they're both pretty equal) runs fine, and the backgrounds are great too. I've had no issues. @OP: Should I link you the Redsn0w beta that you can use to jailbreak? You can disable Cydia, and only select Wallpapers and Multitasking, if you don't want to deal with all the tweaking. It's what I did. I just basically unlocked the Apple-restricted features, and went no further.
Sucks big time that there's no wallpaper, at least for me. :sigh:
Sucks big time that there's no wallpaper, at least for me. :sigh:
Do you want to take the steps to jailbreak it, to get the wallpaper and multitasking?
Why does it matter that its 8 GB? If you use redsn0w then yeah its worth it
I'm too lazy to jailbreak to be honest. I just got the thing today actually.
I'm too lazy to jailbreak to be honest. I just got the thing today actually.
Jailbreaking is easy! Literally takes five minutes of your time, and I swear, you'll be kicking yourself if you don't. Besides, you need to upgrade anyway. In the newest Developers Terms of Service, it states that all developers have six months to integrate iAds and multitasking into their apps, or face deletion. Which means that, if you don't upgrade, you won't be able to use any apps at all. It's free, though, so it's not like you're losing anything. If you don't like it, save the current firmware from your appdata/roaming/apple computer/iPod upgrades/ folder, and downgrade if necessary.

I just needed someone to confirm that it would be slower with IOS4. Maybe I'll do it when 4.0X comes out.

I mean what are the downsides of having a jailbroken iPod?
I mean what are the downsides of having a jailbroken iPod?
Disadvantages:

Possibly shorter battery life
Inability to upgrade to the next major/minor version of iOS as soon as you want to
Possibly increased number of crashes (this is probably largely due to the extra crap you'll install if you jb)
Possibly harder to troubleshoot issues if you do have any problems with your ipod
Advantages:

Vast library of apps you'd never see in the appstore
Far more power to customise the look and feel of the device
Addition of features from iOS4 that you wouldn't otherwise see (backgrounds, multitasking etc)
Addition of other features that you wouldn't otherwise see (tricking apps to use 3g instead of wifi, wifi tethering, wifi syncing, cheats for games, etc)
Many more (I imagine googling something like 'advantages of jailbreaking' would generate a much bigger list).
Try it, the worst thing that could happen is that you need to completely reflash your device with the normal iOS4/iOS3 image and this is trivial. You have literally nothing to lose.
Can I get Hulu on my iPod Touch if I jailbreak? [editline]03:56PM[/editline] Also, can I still download from the iTunes store and the App Store directly from my iPod after jailbreaking?

If you just want a full-featured iOS 4, instead of having to worry with Cydia and everything else, you could just jailbreak via the Redsn0w beta and enable the features that you'd be locked out of otherwise. It'd probably be easier on you, not thinking that you'd have to tweak everything. But if you decide otherwise, that's fine. Here's the link to a blog post, and a guide detailing how to jailbreak iOS 4. http://gizmodo.com/5569298/ios-4-jailbreak-tool-now-available-for-iphone-3g-and-ipod-touch-2g
I can't jailbreak it with MC models (3rd gen) and the sad thing is that I can't downgrade either. FUCK :(
OK so I have iTunes 9.2. How can I downgrade to 9.0? [editline]06:56PM[/editline] Also why use Redsn0w and not Spirit?
