If $12.99 is still too rich for your blood, Coke and McDonalds are now offering VR headsets that are literally the cost of a twelve-pack and a Happy Meal. Various boxes bearing the Coke name and its products fold down into headsets and include a pair of lenses for you to slip into the viewing field. Similarly, the Happy Meal box can be folded into an outer viewing shell that you place the internal viewing device and your smartphone into.
Only in sweden currently, though.

Bummer.
This is actually pretty damn awesome. As limited as the library of Cardboard apps is, it's still a decent way to try out VR without dropping a small fortune.

I'm currently waiting on a set of google cardboard and a replacement battery for my Sangsung S3 in the mail. The idea is that I can use an app called Trinus VR to stream video from my computer to my phone, effectively allowing it to act as a makeshift occulus for TF2, unity games, and of course, porn.
Not sure how well my plan will work out, though, as I don't think the phone supports gyroscope or anything fancy required for head-tilting.
EDIT:
4chan seems to be arguing about how the happy meal goggles' smile looks like a closed eye.

illuminati confirmed.
Sounds pretty neat, although with the Happy Meal model I imagine the cardboard might end up a teeny bit soggy and salty due to its default contents. Which is not something you want to be anywhere near your touchscreen electronics. *shudders at the thought of a greasy screen*
Tell anyone that had a coma since the 90's that even phones are now hundreds of times more powerful than the best gaming PC in the 90's and you can play VR games on them by using a specialized cardboard case for soda
[editline]5th March 2016[/editline]
they'll slip back into a coma
i'd feel with my luck the structure wouldn't properly hold the phone, and the moment i turn my head to the left it'd slip out the cardboard and make a nice crack in my screen upon hitting the ground.
That's ok, even the original rift was just a phone held up by tape
don't be afraid to do the same

It does seem kinda Back to the Future 2, if you think about it.
"Whoa Doc, where's the antenna on this thing?"
"Antennas? Marty, where we're going we won't need antennas..."
Is it just me or do these lenses look a little, err, terrible?

For a second, I thought they had adhesive stuck to them or something :v:

They are lightly glazed or abraded to produce a blur that is desirable for removing pixel lines. The lens isn't what your eyes are focused on, really - It's like looking through a filthy window or metal screen from up close. When you focus your eyes on an object in the distance, it disappears.
The Oculus Rift's lenses have something similar I believe, but obviously of a much higher quality.

So it's kinda like the plastic equivalent of FXAA?

Pretty sure the S3 has the gyroscope and accelerometer required for head-tilting. You won't need Trinus for VR porn either, there are VR video viewing apps.
Also Trinus VR works fucking great (especially in USB mode) for games that are designed to use it. However, other things not so much. I tried it out with HL2 and it was only OK, mostly because you can't activate VR mode unless an Oculus Rift is detected, so you have to use a hacky solution like Vireo. That really fucking sucks too, since there's no technical reason why a Cardboard+Trinus can't be used in place of an Oculus.
tl;dr Trinus is promising as fuck and could be an Oculus killer if VR devs bothered to support it. And I really don't understand why they don't, since anyone can get their hands on a cardboard, unlike the expensive Oculus.
I got a Star Wars themed cardboard few months back, have Trinus on my S4 and PC. Gyroscope is a little whacked out on my phone, but it works good. I use the headset as a mouse, which with the right settings, games like Ace Combat Assault Horizon are super awesome. I still need to tinker around with it. If things like this come to the states, I may get a few of those coke cases just to have extra VR headsets.

What of the OSVR dev kits being sold at 299? Are those incompatible with current games?
I could see it being a problem where developers prefer occulus, or vive, but fail to support the other, let alone cheaper models. Will this be a problem in the foreseeable future, where a lack of net neutrality isn't what's complained about, but a lack of VR neutrality?
I kinda prefer the unity system, where it just gives you another executable for VR compared to regular gameplay on a monitor, and while it will automatically pipe it to an occulus, it will also display on your monitor regardless of whether or not you have an occulus rift connected. Perfect for trinus.

That's why OpenVR is a thing

"Oculus killer"
there is that magical word again
a mobile device (A phone) alone is never going to be good enough to replace a dedicated device (an HMD). This is the same logic as buying a laptop and using it as a desktop and never having it move from the same spot. Hard wired devices VS mobile devices and simple solutions are two insanely different beasts.
one that no less is at best 1080p/60hz, at best, maybe higher or lower depending on the phone, and likely has huge latency issues, works through a cheap solution, does not have dedicated head tracking or anything like that at all
I don't care how 'good' it becomes, the idea that it'd literally kill a company isn't even laughable wrong. It's just blatant exaggeration. at best it'll be an alright cheap way to get VR, that's assuming you already have the 700$ (more pricey than a rift btw) samsung phone
[editline]6th March 2016[/editline]
Even with the best phone on the market you don't get head tracking, the same FOV, decent latency, 90fps/hz, or 1200p resolution
[editline]6th March 2016[/editline]
and no, a gyro and accelerator =/= head tracking.

yeah but it's also $5 + the phone I already own compared to $300-$600 outright
Do you really think 80% of the people who bought an Oculus would have done so if Cardboard + Trinus had the application support that Oculus does? The only reason CT doesn't is because of lazy devs only using the Oculus SDK.
You're right that I shouldn't have said that dumb buzzword, though; the Oculus would most likely survive just fine as an enthusiast-grade VR headset. What I meant was for most people who are only casually interested in VR, a $5 Cardboard would be far more appealing if more things supported it. What we really need is some sort of spoof that will trick games into thinking an Oculus is plugged in, allowing VR mode to be started and used with Trinus.
Also, you don't need a Samsung phone; most flagship Androids will work, and some of which are higher-resolution than the Oculus. Head tracking also works just fine with the phone's built-in gyroscope and accelerometer. Saying that the phone itself makes the cost comparable to an Oculus is foolish; everybody owns a phone these days, and most of them will work with Cardboard. Paying my contract fee for a phone I'm going to use everyday (regardless of whether or not I care about VR) is much different than dropping hundreds of dollars on a VR headset.
I thought VR stuff was not good for kids under 7 or 8 or something like that because it puts too much strain on the eyes, or am I thinking of the 3DS?

I'm sorry but 80%... I can't take this seriously at all, what the fuck.
The difference between something that is nothing short of a temporary and cheap solution, and something that is engineered to do that task, isn't even comparable.
Even with the best phone on the market you don't get head tracking, the same FOV, decent latency, 90fps/hz, or 1200p resolution. You have to clean the phones screen + lens, use uncomfortable mounts, deal with the weight of the phone itself, deal with battery issues, etc. The reason HMD's would be driven out is because it'd be far too hard to deal with
You're right that I shouldn't have said that dumb buzzword, though; the Oculus would most likely survive just fine as an enthusiast-grade VR headset. 80% of the rift's customers aren't "Only casually" interested in VR in the first place.
A huge number would flock to it no doubt but at the end of the day, no matter how much support and how well programmed it is, it literally cannot be compared to dedicated hardware, and would die either way once VR gains ground. And at the end of the day, people using this likely wouldn't have wanted a true VR headset to boot.
and a 5$ cardboard for actual VR gaming isn't even slightly practical. It's still just a piece of cardboard.

a phone =/= a VR HMD.
A phone, in the end, is a phone. It can be used as a VR HMD, but it's still a phone. Using your phone as a every day video gaming VR headset will not be as easy as using dedicated hardware.
[editline]6th March 2016[/editline]
I don't want to push you away because that'd be dickish
but if you're going to compare a phone app to dedicated hardware, no ones going to take you seriously
they're practically two completely different markets of VR. the Rift already is an enthusiast grade VR headset, the thought that 80% of its market would prefer a cheap phone solution to the rift is pretty much ignoring what a rift actually is.
you might as well continue using the buzzword "Oculus killer" when you say that 80% of the market would tell oculus to fuck off and jump ship
[editline]6th March 2016[/editline]
that isn't to say no one would use it. I'd be using Trinus RIGHT NOW if my phone supported it, but it's not the same thing.

At least it's not happy meal box eyes, that would be the worst thing
Staring at your smartphone screen that close up, inside a box? How badly is it going to fuck over your eyesight over time? Starting from very young age like 3-5 yo' kids these days.
Do you need a higher-end phone to use Trinus or would my Optimus L9 work with it?
Do you need a higher-end phone to use Trinus or would my Optimus L9 work with it?
L9 doesn't have a gyroscope, so you'd need a better phone. The resolution on the L9 is also very low. If you really wanna get into it, it's possible to find a used Android phone with a 1080p screen for $75-150, but I'd just wait for your upgrade if I were you.
What if i dont have a gyro
