If a champion is unpopular nowadays, it's because it was nerfed into the ground. Which is what happened with Urgot.
In lower levels of ranking you can use any champion with success as long as you have a reasonable grip on them. Higher up you'll just kick yourself in the heel by using nerfed to hell champs.

I hooked up with a group of friends that were still playing it, and it seems that every champion that I use to play is now 'useless'. I know it's an incredibly hard job to balance 119 characters but damn, I just wish I could play what ever I wanted and didn't have to worry about playing a champ that's just better.
Eh, Sion is worse.
Sion is amazing if you go AP. Get 2 rings ,max out shield and you win lane.
