Hi, FP. I just wanted to share my views on how traffic offenses should be handled by the law. Do you agree with my views?
a) Drunk/drug driving - license revoked permanently, $5000 fine (adjust depending on country)
b) Talking on the phone - license revoked for one year, $5000 fine (use your handsfree/loudspeaker or stop, it's not that hard)
c) Speeding - license revoked permanently, $5000 fine (and I don't mean 5 miles over)
d) Not wearing your seatbelt... While I understand that a country should protect its citizens, I think that you shouldn't be punished for not wanting to protect yourself.
e) General offenses (Running red lights, inconsiderate driving, etc.) - license revoked for a period of time depending on the severity of the offense, $1000-$5000 fine.
f) Offenses that don't endanger lives - monetary fine only
In my opinion, having laws that DO NOT tolerate things that can harm others on the road is the way to go. Please, do not go down the "if we do that, we should execute people for robberies, etc. etc." road - here, we're talking about endangering others' lives.
I think such measures would be very effective in decreasing the number of deaths on the road. Do you? People need to learn that they aren't alone on the road and I believe that's the way to do it.

Those are some good points but

Not wearing a seatbelt can actually hurt someone else. If you crash at a high speed and get thrown out the window there's always a risk of you colliding with another person which could very well be fatal.

Also, some parents don't make their kids wear seatbelts. It's not always good for the government to step in on parenting issues, but this one's a no brainer.

If you're traveling at a speed great enough to be hurdled out of the car, through the steering column (presumably only parts of you), I think that the last thing the person you've crashed into should be worrying about is whether or not he'll be hit by a stray bodypart.

Yeah, maybe a seatbelt should be mandatory if you're under 16/18. Sorta like cigarettes and alcohol - after that, you can do whatever you want with your body.
