Ok so straight to it then.
The problem started 18 months ago and was a slight power loss when you floored it. Since then it has progressed up and recently has become a large problem. Currently the power loss is very frequent, it mostly feels like a loss of about 40HP(common) but can also feel like 140HP(very rare) the car has also started jerking when applying some power down(rareish), feels like a misfire.
Now comes the hard part, diagnosing the problem. First of all the car is not displaying any error codes when checked out by the VW dealer and another smaller garage. The smaller garrage has also checked out what was most likely the problem, the turbos diverter valve, and they say its fine. The second reason that it may be acting up as far as we can tell is some sensors in the engine, we have tried to clean the NOX sensor with some spray designed for it but with no effect. The problem is that this is intermittent and the garage has spent hours trying to figure it out with no luck and now they want to charge £69 an hour so I am just posting this to see if anyone has a clue at all?
Personally I think it is the diverter valve but it isn't broken, its sticky. but there £150 and no so easy to replace.
Any clues would be extremely helpful, thanks.
Spark plugs changed ? Spark plug cables or ignition coil's checkd ?
It could be also a damaged Lambda Sensor/Ecu
Thanks for the reply, but the VW garage have checked all of them and there all ok.
If theres an error with the ECU. The ECU wont tell you if its damaged.
A faulty ecu can cause what you just described
Vag Com is your friend.
Thanks for your reply, I am working on getting a xp laptop for Vag Com as it doesn't work on my vista laptop and the guy who wrote the program has said it needs xp. and we will have to look at the ECU, thanks.

Weird, Windows 7 and Vista work's well for me. Just make sure you get a genuine ross tech cable. Never buy those shit ass Ebay cables.
coil packs.
O2 sensor, mass air flow meter, faulty catalytic converter, blocked injectors.
One ore more of those probably causing the fault.
Unfortunately you can't clean O2 sensors, nor mass air flow metres. The only way to resolve problems with those is a replacement. You can try running some Redex injector cleaner through a full tank of fuel to see if that helps but I'm putting my money on O2 or MAF meter. O2 sensor is about £75 quick and you can fit yourselves, MAF are about £100+ but are only worth fitting if you known what you're doing.
i would think a MAF would be easier to fit than an O2 sensor...

My friend had a 1.8T Golf GTI, his car started to break up under boost, until even at idle it sounded like a highly modded subaru.
Turns out he was only running on 2 to sometimes 3 cylinders because his coilpack connectors (which i believe were actually recalled or a replacement notice issued) were broken because of a low heat resistance plastic was used

you can clean mass air flow sensors
this is the ONLY thing you should use to clean it though:

replacing one shouldn't be that difficult either. I cleaned mine, and the total process only took 10 minutes.
Some are easy to get at, most are betweem the airbox and intake mani but on my airbox someone decided it was a great idea to mount the screws UNDERNEATH so it's a fucking pig to get at, great design there Honda.
