Disney Television Animation is celebrating the 45th anniversary of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion attraction in a big way.
The studio is developing a Disney Channel and Disney XD animated special inspired by the ghoulishly fun popular theme park attraction, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The Haunted Mansion special will be animated by legendary horror genre artist and children's book illustrator Gris Grimly (Gris Grimly's Wicked Nursery Rhymes), who also will exec produce and art direct. Scott Peterson (Phineas and Ferb) will serve as writer, EP and story editor. Joshua Pruett (Phineas and Ferb) is on board as a consulting producer and writer.
"Over the past few years we have focused our strategy on making Disney Television Animation the home for the strongest talent in the business," Disney TV Animation senior vp original series at Disney Television Animation Eric Coleman said. "We have steadily built our roster with both animation veterans and fresh voices, and have fostered an environment where artists support and inspire one another. This group will help us continue to deliver the great storytelling and beloved characters that the Disney animation legacy is known for."

For those who don't know, the Guillermo del Toro movie is still happening too, but is going through several rewrites at the moment.
Favorite ride in Disneyland by far, such a cool / innovative classic, the only bad experience I have with it is when I got stuck during the "Nightmare Before Christmas" takeover in front of singing plants for a good 30 minutes with the high-pitched shrieking looping nonstop.
Hopefully this special does it justice though and isn't just tween humor.
Best ride at Disneyland any other opinion is wrong

Pirates of the Caribbean wants to have a word with you.

I'll be honest, I enjoyed it. It wasn't Pluto Nash, let's put it that way.
Pirates of the Caribbean wants to have a word with you.
Pirates is good, but the changes done to retroactively make it all about Jack Sparrow still irk me.
It's like, if that one movie did a little better at the box office I'd be passing by Eddie Murphy in the Mansion graveyard instead of a gravedigger.

Say whatever you want, I liked it.
Wait, Guillermo Del Toro?
As in the guy whos movies and shows are all pretty graphic? How's his movie gonna turn out? :v:

The exact same thing happened to me. I feel your pain.

Splash Mountain is king!
I remember taking that ride at Disneyland Tokyo.
There were sumo wrestlers behind us in line. Part of the ride got stuck for five minutes. It was awesome.

Why did you go to Japan to go to an American theme park exported overseas?

The family who were rooming us told us one evening over dinner that we were going to Disneyworld in the morning. We had no say in the ordeal but oh man they were the greatest people ever.
Wait, Guillermo Del Toro?

Giant monsters and robots destroy the mansion at the end.

They could have made it really spooky and interesting kind of like the first Pirates movie, but it was kind of lame from what I remember. Mind you I haven't seen it since I saw it in theaters as a child.

If only they didn't add Johnny Depp. I liked the vanilla experience more.
Why did you go to Japan to go to an American theme park exported overseas?
If I recall correctly, the Haunted Mansion can actually change pretty wildly from culture to culture. For starters the Hong Kong Manor has no actual ghosts, and the Paris Manor is owned by an unusually evil phantom who's backstory ties into pretty much every Paris-Frontierland attraction.

Yep, apparently the main character of the movie will be the infamous Hatbox Ghost.
Thought the animated special is a separate project from his movie though.

Mystic Manor isn't really a Haunted Mansion, it is more of Museum of the Weird (A cancelled Disneyland Attraction) meets the Adventurer's Club.

If this is actually one of the concepts of the hatbox ghost(he is going to be the central character) then I'd say its gonna be pretty interesting.

The last one ain't his concept, that's the original animatronic for the character.
For those who don't know, when the Haunted Mansion opened in Disneyland on the 60's, it contained an animatronic of a ghost in the attic called the Hatbox Ghost which looked just like the one you see in the right. What he would do is that his head would disappear and then reappear on the box he was carrying, before the effect was reversed.
While this simple, the imagineers back in the 60's could just not get it to work. So the Hatbox Ghost was removed shortly after the opening, but a bunch of people saw it. It never returned to any versions of the mansion, but what happened is that since the Hatbox Ghost was prominently featured in Haunted Mansion merch (like records and books) he gained a cult following. Disney hasn't also stopped using to promote the attraction, so while he wasn't in the Mansion for a long time, the company never tried to hide him.
Hatbox Ghost's fame has only grown with the internet and sites about Disney history, which is why he's very well-known among the fans of Disney Parks and why Del Toro probably wants to use him.

First time i went to Disney land i was like five, and pirates was the best thing id ever seen.
Love how they played actual audio from the ride in the third film as they go over that massive water fall, the " dead men tell no talesss " line. apparently they replaced that with davey jones on the actual ride now tho and that sucks.

So what happened to him really? They just tossed him out because he didn't really work? I just read that they did, but they're trying to bring him back because he's been such a legend.

Wow really? You're shittin' me. You're not talking about that talking skeleton right before the first dive right? Because I know there's a Davey Jones scene some time after that projected onto some fog.
