Sweet Jesus Fuck I think my harddrive may have broken

Evening Facepunch.
I have a 500gb external Maxtor harddrive that so far has been ok, but now when I connect it to any PC, it's not being recognized as an external drive.
When I plug in the power supply, it whirs up as normal and sounds OK, so I suspect it may be a connection issue.
If it really is a faulty connection, will I be able to remove the drive somehow?
Thanks dudes
How old is the drive / how much use has it had?
Does is appear in the Device Manager, but not get assigned a drive letter?
Check the temps if you get it to show up. Might be overheating.
Might be waaaaay from it, but always worth a shot.
Does the PSU keep whirring or does it stop?
It's an external hard drive, not showing up at all when I plug it into two different PCs, cable are fine, checked them with something else.
It's whirring as usual, but when I plug in the mini USB to the back, it won't find the drive

About 1 or 2 years old, plenty of use I guess, had about 40 gb free
you could probuably take the hard drive out and put it in your PC and see if that works
I may do that soon, it'll void the warranty but fuck it, I need mah stuff.

I thought the warranty on PC's would be voided if you replaced the CPU or motherboard, not opening the case (which on most desktops, is pretty easy).

he means on his hard drive.
Anyone here have similar connection problems?
Does it always do that or does it OCCASIONALLY work?
Because if the latter, then you're having the same problem as me. Only that my harddrive is my boot drive and I usually need to reboot 450 trillion times (or at the very least twice) before it works.
Why? I have no fucking clue. Try reconnecting it tomorrow and if it starts working, back up that fucker and them RMA.
I have nothing to back it up to :saddowns:

Still no joy :smithicide:
I lost all my shit a couple weeks ago because my harddrive crashed, I had to get a new one. It's not any help but I hope you can get it fixed cuz I know what it's like.
I know waiting and retesting connection is more than you can bear, but you must persevere
Well a "connection problem" doesn't necessarily mean that the hard-disk is not broken.
The USB adapter may have failed. Even worse, the head could have crashed into your platters. Those would still spin, so it would sound alright, but the hard-disk would be pretty fucked overall...happened to me once.

Probably physical damage.

No don't do that, that's stupid. Because, if it doesn't work, you're stuck with a brick. If you send it in for repair, you'll either get it fixed or get a new one, but either way, you could get your data recovered from it if it's suffering from physical damage (it probably is).
Thanks Steve Vai, although I'm quite scared now, at least I know why

Glad I could help :D
If the USB adapter has failed, can I replace it?
If the USB adapter has failed, can I replace it?
Perhaps, but you would most likely have to go through support (eg. warranty).
Could I just remove the USB adapter altogether and hook it up to my PC as a normal hard drive?

I was just gonna tell you to do that.
So it could possibly work?
Just send it in for repairs.
i've had the same problem, you're pretty much fucked unless you send it in for repair
it could either be a faulty USB connection or the harddrive itself is completely fucked
you have a couple options, you can crack the case and try to install it as a regular harddrive
or you can try the old freezer trick get it running once and transfer all your data from it, its a one time thing so i would recommend that as an absolute last resort if all else fails
i've had this happen twice now and its fucking annoying as hell, thankfully a terabyte external harddrive is only like $100
When my external failed I simply took it out of its' shell and connected it as a secondary harddrive with the SATA. It still works wonderfully and it's been about two and a half months since I refitted it.
Customer update :
Seagate has isolated a potential firmware issue in certain products, including some Barracuda 7200.11 hard drives and related drive families based on their product platform*, manufactured through December 2008. In some circumstances, the data on the hard drives may become inaccessible to the user when the host system is powered on. Retail products potentially affected include the Seagate FreeAgent® Desk and Maxtor OneTouch® 4 storage
solutions.
As part of our commitment to customer satisfaction, we are offering a free firmware upgrade to those with affected products. To determine whether your product is affected, please visit the Seagate Support web site.

It is a Dutch site but the description is in english.
I can translate stuff you need if you want it.
I had the same problem with an internal Seagate HDD and I got it fixed for free with 0% data loss within 7 days!!
So it could possibly work?
Yeah that should work. External HDDs are just normal HDDs hooked up to an USB adapter.
[editline]11:08AM[/editline]
I guess the problem with sending it in is that the data will be lost for sure. I don't think they care about backing up the data because the customer is supposed to keep his data safe. Seagate would just send him a new, empty HDD.

If it is the problem I have described they just need to hook it up and update the firmware. They will always send back the original drive with the original data and updated firmware.

Ok I'm sorry, I did not read your post completely. I thought you were just posting 'technical' links to Seagate's support page (which often don't help).
Thanks guys, will try firmware thing later
You need to make sure it is turned on
