• Nintendo’s Yoshi sneaks on to Google Play in unlicensed game
Mobile gaming boosters who want Nintendo to give up the hardware game and make titles for iOS and Android were probably excited to see a 3D render of Yoshi's smiling face looking up from a Google Play icon this week. Unfortunately, the green dinosaur's appearance in Era's Adventure 3D, from unknown Hungarian developer Andev, is as phony as the $1.99 bill you'd need to purchase the full version from Google's digital store. As shown in its official YouTube trailer, the game features a 3D Yoshi model practically indistinguishable from the official art used for Nintendo's popular character (save for a permanent, slightly dazed grin on his face). It's unlikely that an official Nintendo game would feature that model walking around semi-realistic wood-and-stone environments, shooting a never-ending stream of fireballs at random piles of barrels and crates, but hey, you never know when Nintendo will decide to mix up the formula, right? Unlike Apple, Google puts apps through little-to-no approval process before making them available on its online store, relying on post-release complaints from users or copyright holders instead. That might be for the best, since it's unrealistic to expect Google to do a full copyright and IP search for all of the thousands of apps that are submitted to Google Play every day (and even Apple's system lets through scams like last year's best-selling fake Pokemon Yellow app). Neither Andev nor Nintendo immediately responded to our request for comment. In any case, we'd expect the normal post-release review process will take down Era's Adventure quite quickly, though it should be noted that none of the 12 "five star" user reviews for the game (out of 14 total so far) seem to mind the game's illegal use of a familiar Nintendo character. And the eventual takedown won't stop the 100 to 500 people that Google Play estimates have already downloaded the game from playing around with a virtual Yoshi on their phones and tablets. Maybe if they squint really hard, they can make themselves believe that Nintendo has actually fulfilled their dreams of a real Yoshi game on Android. The update to the article is even more hilarious:
Botond Kopacz, the developer behind Era's Adventure, has gotten back to Ars Technica, saying that the use of Nintendo's IP was unknowing and inadvertent. "Actually this is an indie game developed by one developer, so due to the limitation of effort, I purchased a cute character from TurboSquid, one of the biggest 3D asset stores, without knowing the background story of the character Yoshi, since I'm not a Super Mario fan," he said in an e-mail.
Youtube Trailer:
How the fuck did they expect to get away with that? (User was banned for this post ("Didn't read the OP" - Craptasket))
How the fuck did they expect to get away with that?
did you even attempt to read the article or
did you even attempt to read the article or
Yes I did and it still doesn't explain how they expected to get away with it.
Looks like Turbosquid is going to end up being the one with the lawsuit then.
Yes I did and it still doesn't explain how they expected to get away with it.
Did you read the part where he bought the model from a site, and didn't know who Yoshi was?
Did you read the part where he bought the model from a site, and didn't know who Yoshi was?
That's bullshit and everyone knows it. How can you be a game designer and not know who Yoshi is? Really. He's just saying that because he got caught and he doesn't want to get sued.
How the fuck do you not know who yoshi is, this guy is lieing.
That's bullshit and everyone knows it. How can you be a game designer and not know who Yoshi is? Really. He's just saying that because he got caught and he doesn't want to get sued.
Not everyone plays Super Mario. Hell, my parents hardly know who Yoshi is, hell, they barely never even played a Mario game except for the original NES version. Although you'd think the guy would do a little more research on the character he bought.
This dude makes video games. Not knowing about Nintendo/Mario while making video games is like being someone who sews pants and doesn't know what belts are.
This dude makes video games. Not knowing about Nintendo/Mario while making video games is like being someone who sews pants and doesn't know what belts are.
Or someone who makes hamburgers and doesn't know what beef is. Anyway, Nintendo probably isn't happy about this. I'll have to see how it goes on the lawsuit...
without knowing the background story of the character Yoshi, since I'm not a Super Mario fan," he said in an e-mail
That's a load of shit.

Saying he didn't know who Yoshi was seems a little hard to believe, but you can't tell me he didn't let anyone test this game before release and not being told about this.
I'm not a fan of Nintendo games and even I know who Yoshi is. Dude's either under a rock or lying.
Or someone who makes hamburgers and doesn't know what beef is. Anyway, Nintendo probably isn't happy about this. I'll have to see how it goes on the lawsuit...
I bet Nintendo's gonna ask for a refund should this game be trying for profit or have a cease and desist placed. Probably not both.
(User was banned for this post ("Didn't read the OP" - Craptasket))
100% accurate and fair ban.
looks very boring
Looks like a pretty shitty game anyway.
It's not too hard to believe the dev is oblivious to a notable video game character when he's that oblivious to interesting gameplay mechanics. Besides if he actually bought the model, the modeler is the criminal here for selling a trademarked character.
without knowing the background story of the character Yoshi, since I'm not a Super Mario fan
This is more see-through than a goddamn wet t-shirt contest!
Looks like this person was all accostumed to use stolen assets in RPG Maker 2003 and decided to take the risk and upload their Game Maker project to Google Play, then backpedaled as soon as they got caught :v:
I didn't know who Yoshi was until about a year or two ago.
If it was a Mario-looking character then I would've called bullshit but Yoshi isn't as well known and there is a chance that the developer actually had no idea who the character was.
If it was a Mario-looking character then I would've called bullshit but Yoshi isn't as well known and there is a chance that the developer actually had no idea who the character was.
Even if they don't know the name of the character or that it is related to Mario, almost everyone at least recognises Yoshi as a thing that exists.
That game looks SO BAD, yoshi doesn't even fit in.
'founded keys'.
I like the lack of jump animation.
