The future is now: Fast food delivery drones trialed in NZ
Domino's demonstrated its ability to deliver food via a drone Thursday in New Zealand and plans to test actual deliveries to customers next month."It doesn't add up to deliver a two kilogram package in a two-ton vehicle," said Scott Bush, a general manager for Domino's Pizza Enterprises, which is independent of the U.S. chain and operates in seven countries. "In Auckland, we have such massive traffic congestion it just makes sense to take to the airways."
Can drones operate when it rains? And what about sub-zero temperatures, won't the food get too cold?
Otherwise it's cool if it can reduce deliveries time.
pizza looked cold, also how will you send the thermally insulated box back?

it was raining during the shoot, but besides that it's exposed the winds.

With some good waterproofing and a heated container for the food, they'd be available pretty much any time as long as there isn't a lot of wind. The bigger issue is how many people will steal the fucking things or destroy them.
aww shiet :v:
new zealand gets pretty windy though, we'll have to see. I'm not exactly sure because I don't own one but I've heard word that drones are pretty strictly regulated here so it'd be interesting to see how far this goes.
I already don't trust fast food places to not put overly processed cheese slime on my fucking hamburger when I explicitly state that I don't want cheese, why would I trust them to tell the drone to deliver it to the right house, or have the order be correct when it arrives.
I hate being cynical over stuff like this because while it's really cool in concept- Human error takes all the fun out of it. It's annoying enough to have to go through the drivethrough twice or go inside because they fucked my order six ways from Sunday, imagine having to send it back via drone. :scream:

Would have to be prepaid electronically; it's the only way it'd work
And destroying them would be an easy vandalism charge in the thousands; not worth destroying
i work at dominos and im 100% confident that only three stores will carry this dru stuff either the robot sidewalker thingy and the drone, it's going to put me out of a job if it was widely introduced and the price of maintenance or getting a pilot would send half of the franchises out of business

Learn to fly a drone instead.
Ah, this is likely to be in the city only, and I live a little bit outside the city where the traffic isn't so bad. There's a domino's about 5 minutes away though, I wonder if they're gonna use a drone.
Learn to fly a drone instead.
great advice, let me sidetrack away from my actual studies of being in the media industry to learn basic drone aviation to get my pilot's licence to secure my job that im only working to make some coin on the side of my studies even tho i dont want to be working for them my entire life
come on be realistic, franchises aren't going to have this shit because aviation licences are incredibly costly, maintenance as well and the likelihood of this thing malfunctioning and falling down has to be accommodated
i see so many problems with this that i think it'll be pretty much ditched like the sidewalker (dru) because the amount of "what if's" outweigh convenience
i think it'll become a thing, just not any time soon. too many kinks to work out.
a lot of people saw what if's with self-serve check outs too. even as a pizza delivery driver i think this is for the best.
I don't know why any delivery drivers, you especially are happy with this. This is your job gone if this thing went wide spread. And good luck being an instore above 18, you're without a job.

"Alright guys, some dude who's doing media studies told us it ain't gonna work, pack up shop and sell the drones for scrap, it's back to the drawing board."

I don't know, people have been working out drones for a while now. We probably don't even know about the things the tech whizzes came up with.

You sound like a coal miner when they hear about green energy.

No offense but delivering food is not a career
Im pretty sure they would just use an automated system for the flying, there would be no point employing someone to manually fly the drones when the tech is so readily available.
This will never work though, how do you stop people stealing the drones, how do you stop people using other drones to steal the drones, what happens when the weathers bad, how do you keep people who can deliver when the weathers bad when its not bad most of the time.
The list goes on.
This will never work though, how do you stop people stealing the drones, how do you stop people using other drones to steal the drones
how do you stop people from robbing the driver? drones would probably have gps locators on them, if it goes off course or stays at the destination too long the store could call the cops.

It says it will need a human "to stand by" which might very well be you, in your big boy delivery shorts, to make sure the drone hasn't lost it's way.
Im pretty sure they would just use an automated system for the flying, there would be no point employing someone to manually fly the drones when the tech is so readily available.
Confirmed for never reading the article, they specifically say they want to have it automated.
This will never work though, how do you stop people stealing the drones,
Presumably with some kind of tracking device that will most definitely be installed anyway.
what happens when the weathers bad,
Define "bad" because gale force winds are bad but so are light sprinkles just strong enough to be annoying.
how do you keep people who can deliver when the weathers bad when its not bad most of the time.
Hm, if only there were something in the article about drone delivery being a premium service and thus necessitating a need for drivers...
The list goes on.
Does it really though?
I already don't trust fast food places to not put overly processed cheese slime on my fucking hamburger when I explicitly state that I don't want cheese
why would you emphasize ham, there's no ham in a hamburger
As a delivery driver for doms this is terrible news.
why would you emphasize ham, there's no ham in a hamburger
Not with that attitude there isn't.
(seriously cut pork into the ground beef chuck, it's fucking glorious)
No offense but delivering food is not a career
You're absolutely right but youth unemployment in this area is already rock bottom so Dominos replacing the jobs youth do is going to drive it even harder in the ground
You sound like a coal miner when they hear about green energy.
Unlike drivers, a coal miner can easily get a job in the green industry. Try that with this
For the record I agree with you and I'm actually a door dash delivery driver right now; but I knew it couldn't last forever, even if it was a great job to have while studying because flexible hours
why would you emphasize ham, there's no ham in a hamburger
It implies it's not a cheeseburger.
When I order a hamburger, I say hamburger. Not cheeseburger. Ham. Burger. Implying that there is no cheese on this hamburger. Because it'd then be a cheeseburger.
But sometimes, even when I say hamburger, and explicitly state, no fucking cheese, I still get a fucking cheeseburger.
Make sense now?

You must get spit in your hamburger when you order too...

Fantastic, so are you going to reply to every single person that mentioned anything slightly different from the article and bring them up on "not reading" it as well?
Strong winds, which being an island nation are common place to occur in (compared to inland areas), would be defined as "bad weather" in the case of a drone.
Someone from NZ want to chime in about that? We get super strong winds all the time on the coast here.
And yeah, the list does go on you smart-ass. There is a ton of things that could go wrong here,
How would insurance even work and if something messes up who becomes liable?
What if someone complains about noise and makes a stink to the local governing body?
How do you keep it from being attacked by birds?
Also GPS is not some magical anti criminal shield, it can be disabled and it can be spoofed, its happened in america so im sure it can happen in NZ
And after all of this, is it even economically viable? Its alot of overhead to setup, and if you lose a drone thats an expensive replacement your going to need meaning you would need to charge out the ass for the drone delivery to the point where I doubt anyone would ever use it, if you're rich enough to blow money on a "premium" service you probably wouldn't be buying $10 pizzas from a fast food outlet
If you disagree with me thats fine, bring up points why but you really don't need to go to the effort of forming an overly cynical response to each individual comment like its an insult directed at you.
