I got a silicone case, and it came with a screen protector (I put the iPod straight from the box to the case) and when I put the protector on, there were a shitload of air bubbles, so of course I took it off and used a roller to make it smoother. After a few attempts, a few specs of dust got stuck on the sticky end of the protector, and when I tried to get them off I just got more crap on the sticky side.
Would it really be worth buying a new protector, or should the screen be fine without one?
You should be alright.
I just realized that the silicone goes out a few centimeters so as long as I don't keep anything else in my pocket with it, it should be virtually impossible for anything that could scratch it to come in contact with the screen.
Unrelated, I'm trying to run Aptbackup to get my shit back, but it's been going for like 10 minutes. It's a new iPod, but I restored it from a backup of the last one that I had. Is there any reason why it wouldn't work?
I've never used a screen protector since bought my iPod touch a few years ago and it's scratch free (and it's a 1st gen that aren't as scratch resistant as the newer models).
You'll be fine, the only scratches you'll have to worry about will be on the chrome.
Don't get one, the screen does not scratch.
I don't have one myself too.

My last iPod (2nd gen 16gb) got a few scratches on it when I had it on the screen, and when I got it back from apple it had a shitload on it (why they sent me a new one).
Honestly, I'm thinking of selling it to this guy on craigslist for guitar hero with two guitars and cash, and then get a smaller touch. Don't need all 32gb, and I've wanted GH for a while.
Not possible, that must've been a 1G.
No, it was definitely a 2g, it had speakers and volume control.
I recommend getting one, better safe than sorry
It doesn't scratch, search youtube for "iPod Font Screen Scratch Testing", a case on the back is good enough.
Unless you're planning to run a rock over your screen don't bother.

Wont scratch it, will crack the screen.

I don't think rubbing a rock across the screen with medium force will crack it.
The iPod Touch / iPhone screen is brilliant, there is no need for a screen protector. It won't get scratched unless you keep it in your pocket with change for like a month. It will look worse with a screen protector too, the things get old fast and start to peel off.
If you're extremely paranoid about scratching your iPod, then I say go for it. However don't use the piece of shit ones that come bundled with cases. Ghost Armor makes an excellent screen and back casing protector. The screen itself does seem pretty scratch resistant but I don't like taking chances.
Best Buy does this thing where they install the Ghost Armor for you and then give you a 3 year scratch coverage. If you get any sort of scratch on the armor you can take it into a participating store to get it replaced for free. I already had to do it once and it was quick and easy.
I don't have a cover on my 2G. There is one small deep scratch, but its only noticeable if you really look for it in the proper light. My house keys are particularly sharp. They also got a scratch on my phone's screen as well.
Lesson: Don't put keys in the same pocket as your iPod, phone, etc.
If you're as fussy as me, you might find it's worth getting one, not just because of scratches, but because it can keep the screen getting smudged and fingerprinted to death. Get a matte screen protector, I recommend a brand called Power Supply, simply because that's what I found to be best (went through about three different ones before settling on this one). I suggest you pair it with a Switcheasy case too, but then again you already bought a case so nevermind.
Just to show you what I mean about matte screen protectors, I haven't really cleaned this iPhone with the cloth in ages, and yet, have a look at the top left corner where the light reflects, not a single smudge in sight, it's absolutely perfect.

I find if you get the glass screen mucky enough, your finger starts to stick slightly and doesn't glide quite as smoothly, the matte protectors avoid this. Basically, I can't recommend them enough, that case and the protector are some of the best I've ever used (and I've been through a LOT). :P
