In my lifetime of being an electronics consumer, I've been exposed to many different kinds of cases and many different kinds of media being held in said cases. Looking back on it, pretty much every single one of them had serious flaws, either in ease of use, disk safety, durability, and least importantly, eco-friendliness. Why the hell haven't we come up with a media case that doesn't suck?

Back in ye olde days media came in jewel cases. They were compact, simple to use, and easy to read and store. They had problems, though. Their hinges were simply two plastic tabs, with one broken the case was useless. Even worse, the plastic they were made of was brittle and easily scratched. The spine text was usually small because of the methods used in making the case, the manual slips were tiny and took lots of effort to replace them, and the disk button was made out of plastic teeth and most of them ended up breaking off or damaging the ring. In short: they sucked. However, they're still to this day the most compact case, save for thin jewel cases which suck just as badly.

DVD cases. Officially they're called keep cases or amaray cases, but nobody cares. The pictures case is probably the best case you will ever use. That disk-button design that easily will remove the disk with no problems. Here's the issue, not everyone likes to use that case. In fact, plenty of people have decided to cases with less plastic are the way to go. Unfortunately, less plastic somehow translates into "cd button that you must use both hands on a table to press down, usually damaging your disk anyways." On top of that, for some reason these come in taller cases, which is for no reason other than for cover art or the manual.

Some computer programs come in cardboard boxes, which holds a paper sleeve for your disk inside. These were fairly sturdy, although being cardboard has it's disadvantages. Mainly, water and folding. The paper sleeves really didn't help much, they do protect against abrasive surfaces but it's almost as if the disks are charged to attract dust and scrachy stuff while inside the sleeve, on top of getting lost. And putting the sleeve back in the box was usually the last thing you did. They were usually massive and the cardboard made them flimsy and ugly.

And furthermore, in some mutation of both boxes, PC games and programs now come in double-thick DVD cases. They have an improved button (it's more like a spindle), but infortunately most games released nowadays are only one DVD, so it's wasted plastic and space. Bonus points if you're valve and have the game come with one sheet of paper with a CD key on it and one DVD.

Bluray disks come in their special packaging, which is a very large improvement on the size and usability of DVD cases. The only real gripe with it is with the hippies, you could cut a bunch of plastic and size. Oh, and they only come with HD movies and PS3 disks.
However, the real issue is size. Jewel cases were the right size, but they're more complicated to make and aren't sturdy at all. DVD cases aren't very big, nor are bluray cases, but nowadays it's all about cutting plastic use. The best way to cut the amount of materials used is to cut the size of the object, not cutting holes in it or compromising it's usefulness. You also don't get any gripes with people trying to store these things, you can't go wrong with a smaller package. The only real reason to use thick cases is thick manuals, and to be fair nobody reads manuals.
What we need is a small, compact, form-fitting case that still has the spine piece and doesn't compromise for envoronmental friendliness. We need something like this:

Assuming you change the disk clip, it would have clips that won't break your disk in half. It doesn't waste plastic. it's small, yet still does it's job. It has space for manuals or another disk or two.
Why aren't we using cases like that instead of cutting holes in dvd cases to make them flimsy as hell?
i read it as dick cases.
Dissapointed.
I was hoping to find a new apparel for my penis. My used mini tuxedo grows quite old over the weeks.

Expecting too much from certain types of disk cases I see.
I agree, some companies are trying to change the existing design rather than make a better one.
Very nice photoshop by the way

Improved dick cases huh? I would ask what dick cases are, but I don't think I want to know.
Or, we need to make the transition to solid state media and stop fiddling with optical storage.
If you really want me to say; I never really cared for the case.
Even though most of the points you told are right, it never really bothered me except those cases that you have some stupid useless plastic-lock on the sides, which you have to unclip before opening the said case. Other than that, I just open the damn thing and place the CD or DVD wherever it goes.
And nice photoshop.

It's more expensive to sell a solid state media carrier and the media inside it than to use a disc, isn't it?
It's more expensive to sell a solid state media carrier and the media inside it than to use a disc, isn't it?
A blu ray disk probably costs like $2 to make, a DVD is like $.10 and a CD is laughably cheap.
We could have solid state games like old consoles did, but we'd need some breakthroughs to get it to work. Flash memory is still fairly pricey.
I'm really digging that photoshopped case you made. In all seriousness you should present it to a CD case manufacturing company.
Nice photoshop, that case would be pretty awesome

I think I've seen a case like that before, somewhere. The only problem with cases that thin is that they're a bit more annoying than DVD cases to get a grip on and open, but I think that case idea is otherwise fantastic.

If you're not Al Gore, you won't damage the disk.

Patent that. Sell it.
Make millions from CD/DVD packaging facilities.

Blu-ray cares are probably the best CD cases out right now. I recently bought a 20 pack of them for 7.99. They're awesome and blue.
Fuck, I know this feeling all too well.
It really irks me when you try and take the disc out from the case, and it ends up bending and causing you to freak out because of a stupid fucking spindle in the middle that does not budge. :unsmigghh:
My disk case:
.iso
I don't even discs, I have .gcf's.

thanks ill do just that
There are already CD cases like that, come to find out.

Still, games should come in cases like that. Not some large bullshit poorly made case.
I have about 16 PS1 games and 90% have cracks in the cases...

these always did the job for me.

God I hate those cases.
At just about every asian dvd store they always sell these stupidly thin dvd cases which haven't been bent properly, so they always naturally open even when closed.
I just hate the one which take fucking 30 mins to get out of the case because the disk bends 90 fucking degrees while you take it out.
The PS3 bluray discs are almost indestructible. They certainly last longer than DVD discs.
I usually prefer regular jewel cases, except trying to take the booklet out of them can be a ballbuster because of THOSE TWO GODDAMN PLASTIC RIDGES THAT HAUNT ME IN MY SLEEP DFLIHGSDLJVNSLKJRUHGGKLUHJSVKR

i can tell you first hand since that is me holding it, that they're shit. you don't want a case like that.

in my experience, blu-ray cases and steelbooks are the best. fuck conserving space, they look good and don't break.
