Hey all, welcome to the PC Building thread. Want to build or upgrade? No problem, this is the place. [B]Resources[/B] [URL="http://pcpartpicker.com"]pcpartpicker.com[/URL] – A fantastic resource for both comparing prices from many websites and doing some basic compatibility checks. To export in a format compatible with FP, select Export/Markup, then under format select BBCode. Then copy and paste the text in your post. The best part of all is that this site is available in many different regions and countries Here are two excellent guides for the actual assembly of a system. It's actually fairly easy, and following a good guide like one of these, the chances to mess something up are extremely slim. [URL="http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/274745-31-step-step-guide-building"]An excellent step-by-step guide using pictures, it is cleanly laid out and easy to follow[/URL] This is a multi-part Newegg YouTube series that is very long and comprehensive. No question is stupid in the realm of blowing $1k on a new system. Watch the quality of your PSU. It's not going to give you any extra performance, but a poor quality PSU can cause unnecessary stress on your component, causing them to age faster. Seasonic and rebrands such as XFX and Rosewill Capstone are excellent buys, as are SuperFlower units (and accompanying rebrand of the EVGA G2 series) and finally Delta units, most commonly they are found in Antec boxes. Check out the Antec HCP if you're in the market for a top notch PSU with high wattage. And please don't get a Corsair CX. Watch out for motherboard compatibility. An 1150/1155 socket motherboard does NOT mean it will work out of the box with every CPU that fits. You need to watch out for refeshes and "ticks" in the architecture. A good case can make or break a long term build. A good case is a dream to build in, and can both increase airflow and ease the process, while a bad case can bend, and leave some nasty cuts. Don't listen to just one person for your build if you've got time to wait. People have bias', and can miss some nice deals that just dropped. Even Kiwi. [B]Recommended Power Supply Models[/B] Here's just a quick list of model names that are generally recommended for a great quality unit that should last a long time without issues. [B]Seasonic[/B]: m12/S12/S12G/S12-II, [B]XFX[/B]: TS/XTR/PRO, [B]Superflower[/B]: Any, [B]EVGA[/B]: G2/P2/T2/GS, [B]Antec[/B]: HCG/TruePowerClassic/Earthwatts Green/Edge/HCP [B]Builds[/B] If you play the kind of games that are popular around here, you'll probably need a quad-core processor and some sort of graphics card. Here are some basic outline builds for a couple budgets. Generally anything above these you'll want to make an actual thread, as your specific needs/wants for a more expensive system can greatly sway the ideal parts. Note that all prices are US-based and RAM is [I]really[/I] expensive right now. $500/Minimum Budget build: [QUOTE][url=https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VgYrJV]PCPartPicker part list[/url] / [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/list/VgYrJV/by_merchant/]Price breakdown by merchant[/url] [b]CPU:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/TX4NnQ/amd-ryzen-3-1300x-35ghz-quad-core-processor-yd1200bbaebox]AMD - Continuing from last thread, the build is looking something like this: [QUOTE]CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor ($249.99 @ Amazon Canada) Motherboard: MSI - B350 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard ($115.00 @ Vuugo) Storage: Crucial - MX300 275GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($113.99 @ PC Canada) x2 Samsung Spinpoint 3.5 1TB HDDs (Free) Video Card: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB GAMING Video Card ($369.99 @ Memory Express) Power Supply:SeaSonic - 520W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply Case: Corsair Carbide 200R Ram:???[/QUOTE] Honestly it's been years since I've researched into building PCs and I kinda just want a quick turnaround and I'm not too interested in overclocking or going further into surface level, do you think I should go with the 4x8gb or 2x16? Whatever one you think can you recommend some to buy plase. Whatever gets me the best results out of the box for cheaper is preferable, I'm not too picky.
So I posted my specs somewhere else, and someone recommended an easy upgrade would be to just get a 1060 and slap it in there. [t]https://my.mixtape.moe/uxgerx.PNG[/t] I only do 1080p gaming, and my goal is to be able to run heavily modded games smoothly (fallout 4, Xcom 2, etc) hence all the ram. So my questions are: Is a 1060 a good card to go with, or an equivalent AMD card? Should my goal be one with lots of VRAM, or is that overkill for what I am trying to accomplish?

I recognize that, but I don't think this crytomining phase will end. Last time card prices were jumped up because of it, they went back down when bitcoin "crashed." Now everyone's on a hundred other cryptocurencies. Patience isn't a problem, I could wait. But for another few years?
[QUOTE=chipsnapper2;53036540]1060’s are fucking expensive right now, unless you feel like blowing $250 on the 3GB version (don’t), wait.[/QUOTE] You need to [URL="https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133734&cm_re=gtx_1060-_-14-133-734-_-Product"]look harder for the deals[/URL] These are back ordered but you can at least get locked in at that price. Also the difference between the 3GB and 6GB is like 15 FPS at max. The price:performance for the [URL="https://www.ebay.com/itm/ASUS-GeForce-GTX-1060-3GB-Phoenix-Fan-Edition-VR-Ready-HDMI-DP-DVI-Graphics-Card/382131808642?epid=2200194139&hash=item58f8d4a982:g:DlEAAOSwzx9Z0Oi~"]3GB 1060[/URL] is well worth it at this point.
So my mobo has an m.2 slot that I've wanted to populate for a little while now, but I'm pretty sure its not PCIe, and it takes up 2 SATA ports when its used. To get the full speed of a nice M.2 drive like a 960 EVO, I was gonna get this: https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-M-2-Adapter-Profile-Express/dp/B01FU9JS94. I'd use it as a boot drive to actually enjoy that speed and all. Can this little card get all the speed of the 960 EVO? Specs below if it helps [img]https://i.imgur.com/Y6baDJI.jpg [/img]
my friend purchased these parts, I think he went quite a bit overboard, but besides that, are there any glaring issues? Aside from paying about $500 more than he really needed to, it looks fine. People overpay and overcomplicate stuff all the time.
Yeah the cooler is garbage, anything under 240mm on an AIO will perform worse than a decent air cooler.
Is 600w enough to power all that??
[QUOTE=helifreak;53038537]Yeah the cooler is garbage, anything under 240mm on an AIO will perform worse than a decent air cooler.[/QUOTE] Sure, but you have to weigh in the fact that it's an ultra-compact build, that AIO will still outperform any "conventional" cooler compatible with that case when it comes to both temperatures and noise. Also, I personally would've picked a graphics card with a reference/blower cooler instead, regardless of the slightly decreased performance and increased noise, to make sure that as much heat as possible is able to escape instead of lingering around in that tiny case, would be healthier for the VRMs and what not on the motherboard [editline]11th January 2018[/editline] [QUOTE=austin0331;53042486]Is 600w enough to power all that??[/QUOTE] 1800X + 1080 + storage = ~350W under load, maybe 400W if you push both the CPU and the GPU to 100% at the same time. The rest of that list is just sleeving and other forms of decoration, so yep

I'm honestly not holding my breath for them to go down, either, even if the demand levels out the current major manufacturers (I.E Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron) have little reason to lower their prices considering people basically have no other choice. Someone should shine a bit of light onto them, shit's starting to feel a bit cartel-esque
Just spent over $260 for 16gb of DDR4, I can attest to this bullshit

Hey peeps, I was thinking of an upgrade to Ryzen or Zen+ in the next few months. I have a Skylake i5, but I need more motherboard features (like builtin Wi-Fi and M.2 support), so I figured I might as well get onto a platform that will last a few years down the line. So here's where I am right now: [QUOTE][url=https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fgXb4C]PCPartPicker part list[/url] [b]CPU:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/xwhj4D/intel-cpu-bx80662i56500]Intel - Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor[/url] [b]Motherboard:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/CHBrxr/asrock-motherboard-h170mitxdl]ASRock - H170M-ITX/DL Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard[/url] [b]Memory:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/HTWrxr/gskill-memory-f42133c15d8grr]G.Skill - Ripjaws 4 series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory[/url] [b]Storage:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/8bPfrH/crucial-internal-hard-drive-ct128m4ssd2]Crucial - M4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive[/url] [b]Storage:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/2VWrxr/crucial-mx300-525gb-25-solid-state-drive-ct525mx300ssd1]Crucial - MX300 525GB 2.5" Solid State Drive[/url] [b]Video Card:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/tJyxFT/evga-geforce-gtx-1060-6gb-sc-gaming-video-card-06g-p4-6163-kr]EVGA - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB SC GAMING Video Card[/url] [b]Case:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/XbKhP6/fractal-design-case-fdmcanode202aaus]Fractal Design - Node 202 HTPC Case w/450W Power Supply[/url] [b]Case Fan:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/TPjG3C/corsair-case-fan-co9050015wled]Corsair - Air Series AF120 White 52.2 CFM 120mm Fan[/url] [i]Generated by PCPartPicker 2018-01-12 09:33 EST-0500[/i][/QUOTE] Drive cage full, stock coolers and clocks on everything. I do enjoy the goofiness of having 2 NICs but I think the Intel one is better. I like ASRock boards, but I've heard their wifi is a bit spotty. Is it a good idea to move to Gigabyte? Finally, I want to try OCing a bit. The 1600's stock cooler is too tall for the case, so I'll get either a C7 or NH-L9-A if I can find one. Here's what I was thinking: [QUOTE][url=https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tyhGm8]PCPartPicker part list[/url] / [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tyhGm8/by_merchant/]Price breakdown by merchant[/url] [b]CPU:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/mV98TW/amd-ryzen-5-1600-32ghz-6-core-processor-yd1600bbaebox]AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor[/url] ($198.89 @ OutletPC) [b]CPU Cooler:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Lbhj4D/cryorig-cpu-cooler-c7]CRYORIG - C7 40.5 CFM CPU Cooler[/url] ($29.99 @ Amazon) [b]Motherboard:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/4YkwrH/gigabyte-ga-ab350n-gaming-wifi-rev-10-mini-itx-am4-motherboard-ga-ab350n-gaming-wifi-rev-10]Gigabyte - GA-AB350N-Gaming WIFI (rev. 1.0) Mini ITX AM4 Motherboard[/url] ($100.98 @ Newegg) [b]Memory:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/HTWrxr/gskill-memory-f42133c15d8grr]G.Skill - Ripjaws 4 series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory[/url] (Purchased For $0.00) [b]Storage:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/8bPfrH/crucial-internal-hard-drive-ct128m4ssd2]Crucial - M4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive[/url] (Purchased For $0.00) [b]Storage:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/2VWrxr/crucial-mx300-525gb-25-solid-state-drive-ct525mx300ssd1]Crucial - MX300 525GB 2.5" Solid State Drive[/url] (Purchased For $0.00) [b]Video Card:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/tJyxFT/evga-geforce-gtx-1060-6gb-sc-gaming-video-card-06g-p4-6163-kr]EVGA - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB SC GAMING Video Card[/url] (Purchased For $0.00) [b]Case:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/XbKhP6/fractal-design-case-fdmcanode202aaus]Fractal Design - Node 202 HTPC Case w/450W Power Supply[/url] (Purchased For $0.00) [b]Case Fan:[/b] [url=https://pcpartpicker.com/product/TPjG3C/corsair-case-fan-co9050015wled]Corsair - Air Series AF120 White 52.2 CFM 120mm Fan[/url] (Purchased For $0.00) [b]Total:[/b] $329.86 [i]Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available[/i] [i]Generated by PCPartPicker 2018-01-12 09:57 EST-0500[/i][/QUOTE] I've got a $100 giftcard to MicroCenter, plus I was going to resell the i5 and board along with an old i7 I had. Friend and I have been planning my first build, thought I'd share and ask for advice and recommendations. Budget is $2000 AUD, but I'm willing to stretch it a bit for better value. RGB is nice but not a major concern should this go over budget. New builder here, so take it easy on me, but I've done a clean build recently with a formatted hard drive, and my GPU output is showing nothing on screen. When I use the mobo output it brings me to the desktop as normal. Is this a lack of drivers, or do I need to prioritize GPU output over mobo output is the BIOS or Windows settings somewhere?

[QUOTE=fishyfish777;53048273]is the power plugged into the gpu right[/QUOTE] Turns out it just needed the drivers from the disk installed. But now I have a bigger problem. In dxdiag, it doesn't seem to be recognizing the card. It says it's name is Windows Default Driver and that my VRAM is 0. In the box below it says that GeForce GTX 1060 6gb isn't working correctly and that my error code is 43. I can't find any solid solutions with that error. In Device Manager it shows the name of the card and little yellow warning icon next to it. Drivers should be fully updated
Well I needed to test if my card was being declined so I started off the build by buying the case. [I]It's time.[/I]

Download the latest drivers from Nvidia's website ([URL]http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/129081/en-us[/URL]) 2. Download Display Driver Uninstaller and extract it ([URL]http://www.guru3d.com/files-get/display-driver-uninstaller-download,9.html[/URL]) 3. Boot into safe mode and run DDU, choose "Clean and restart" (also make sure that it's targetting the Nvidia drivers rather than the Intel ones) 4. Install the drivers you downloaded earlier Return with results, if it still refuses to work you may be unfortunate enough to have gotten a DOA graphics card

Is cryptomining still driving their prices up?
[QUOTE=ballads;53050719]I said that to some group and one of them called me "Fucking stupid" and told me "I need to open my fucking eyes and its been happening for a year."[/QUOTE] Specifically one of the top choices for normal GPU mining (ETH) just like doubled and completely refucked the market. I was looking at 1080's like 2 weeks ago and wish I pulled the trigger then. [editline]13th January 2018[/editline] Also thanks for making the thread chipsnapper
[QUOTE=ZombieDawgs;53050752]Is cryptomining still driving their prices up?[/QUOTE] GDDR5X (1080 / 1080ti) isn't great for mining which is why 1070s were going for the same price as 1080s initially. I have no idea what the fuck caused this jump given it's not a global one like the mining related one was.
