George R. R. Martin, author of the best-selling "A Song of Ice and Fire" fantasy series, indicated that the latest instalment could be finished this year. Martin has worked on "The Winds of Winter" (TWoW) since its predecessor, "A Dance with Dragons", was published in 2011. TWoW will be the sixth and penultimate book in the series, which is currently being adapted into the award-winning HBO series "Game of Thrones." The books — and TV adaptation — focus on the fractured fictional kingdoms of Westeros and Essos, and the court intrigue and bloody battles playing out between an expansive cast of dozens of characters. Posting on his blog, Martin announced that he's pulling out of the World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga, because he has "too many things on my plate." But he added the caveat that he may change his mind "should I complete and deliver WINDS OF WINTER before these cons roll around." He suggested that progress on TWoW is going well, and could be realistically completed this year. Previously, the author's publisher said there were no plans for publication in 2015. And past books in the series have also been mired by delays: Martin originally intended to finish "A Dance with Dragons" by 2006, but after numerous holdups, it was finally released 5 years later, in 2011. For this reason, Martin previously said he won't "play games with news about the books," and that the announcement of when it is complete would be "straightforward and to the point." So, considering his statement about the completion of the book, it looks like this is a strong indicator that he doesn't envision many holdups. As progress on "A Song of Ice and Fire" continued to drag on, fans of the book have grown increasingly concerned about its TV adaptation "Game of Thrones" overtaking the events of the books. I haven't watched or read GoT yet... Should I? Is it that good?
I haven't watched or read GoT yet... Should I? Is it that good?
yes
I hope so, It'll be interesting to see if any of the fan theories about what will happen are true.
I haven't watched or read GoT yet... Should I? Is it that good?
It's worth doing both, but read the books first.
I haven't watched or read GoT yet... Should I? Is it that good?
Read, then watch.
Did anyone else see "George R R Martin" and assume he had died?
but essos is not a kingdom
Remember, the continent of Sothoryos - an analogue of Africa - is a land of hot, plague-ridden jungles, hostile wildlife and hairy "ape-men".
Remember, the continent of Sothoryos - an analogue of Africa - is a land of hot, plague-ridden jungles, hostile wildlife and hairy "ape-men".
I wonder if Sothoryos will have any impact in the series. Would love to see some more lore regarding it. Can't wait for Winds, the cliffhanger in the end of Dance.. Worse than HL2:EP2... Weird to think it's been 4 years since Dance.
I haven't watched or read GoT yet... Should I? Is it that good?
Good if you like dark political intrigue and don't mind a lot of gore and sex onscreen. There's also some fantasy elements, but they're usually in the background and rarely matter beyond their general roles like "someone's acquired weapons of mass destruction, better keep an eye on them" or "there's a global crisis on the horizon, get your shit together". For the most part it's earthly politics and conflicts with fantasy labels.
I watched but didn't read am I some sort of pleb scrub?
yes don't bother now
Did anyone else see "George R R Martin" and assume he had died?
Terry Pratchett, Robin Williams, Spock... I wouldn't be surprised if your assumption was right.
I want to believe it but at the same time I feel that it wont. The wait has been too long god damn it!
I wish I could set time aside for reading shit but I always just browse the internet until I go to sleep
I am both excited and not. The story itself is great, but GRRM's writing style bores me to tears, I just got sick of it and gave up halfway through ADWD and read what happens on the wiki. [sp]CLEGANEBOWL GET HYPE[/sp]
I hope so, It'll be interesting to see if any of the fan theories about what will happen are true. It's worth doing both, but read the books first.
I did this to begin with but now I'm waiting for the next series before carrying on with the books. There was no drama when I knew what had happened in the book. This way I can watch the big dramatic fast paced version on GoT, then finish with the real, deeper version of the books. So I'd recommend watching it first, then reading it.
I'm slightly worried that they said that characters would die in the show that haven't died yet in the books, mainly because (BOOK)[sp]Jon Snow might actually be dead, and the series might overtake that part in the books[/sp]
While it is a bit too optimistic to expect it this year, it's still reassuring to hear this from GRRM. A lot of fans have been assuming recently that hes getting sick of writing it or has given up altogether.
Publisher says it won't be 2015, so I doubt it'll be released this year.
"I certainly hope that THE WINDS OF WINTER is not on the schedule of ANY of my publishers. I have spent years trying to persuade them all not to schedule my books until they are completed and delivered. Scheduling, and then having to reschedule and postpone, just pisses people off. I’d rather not schedule at all until the date is real and certain. This flies against standard publishing practice, however, so it’s a battle that I do not always win." Straight from George.

There's a big difference between him finishing writing in 2015 and the book being published in 2015
There's a big difference between him finishing writing in 2015 and the book being published in 2015
No where in the title or article did it say "published 2015" It says "may be finished"

It's just there to resemble what Africa must have been like to people in the middle ages. A far off land that nobody knows what dwells there, GRRM himself said this. It has as much likelihood of appearing in the story as Asshai by the Shadows.
