• Scientists are developing a computer that can read scientific literature and generate hypotheses
The aim of Dr. Anna Korhonen and researchers in the Natural Language and Information Processing Group in the University of Cambridge’s Computer Laboratory is to develop computers that can understand written language in the same way that humans do. One of the projects she is involved in has recently developed a method of ‘text mining’ one of the most literature-dependent areas of biomedicine: cancer risk assessment of chemicals. Every year, thousands of new chemicals are developed, any one of which might pose a potential risk to human health. Complex risk assessment procedures are in place to determine the relationship between exposure and the likelihood of developing cancer, but it’s a lengthy process, as Royal Society University Research Fellow Dr Korhonen explained: “The first stage of any risk assessment is a literature review. It’s a major bottleneck. There could be tens of thousands of articles for a single chemical. Performed manually, it’s expensive and, because of the rising number of publications, it’s becoming too challenging to manage.”
http://www.physorg.com/news/2011-11-language-science.html
This thing will do SO much science, just when you think it's done, you turn your head and BAM! MORE science!
But can it detect bullshit in Science Fiction?
Sounds like something straight out of Portal
So they're seeking to advance the thinking machine, eh? Hopefully they'll get pretty far before they're all blown to pieces by the Butlerian Jihad. (a crusade in the Dune universe whereby all intelligent machines were destroyed, and no-one was allowed to make true thinking machines. In the "Orange Catholic Bible" of the Dune-verse, a commandment reads "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind.")
Or in other words: Think for itself. This cannot end well if they go through with it.
This sounds exactly like GLaDOS
Then the hypothese will always ether be cake or death.

Brb reading all the books again for like the 12 time :v:
Fuck yess. ask it what's the meaning of the universe

If it gets out of control, logic bomb it with star trek episodes and tell it to work out conclusions based on TV-Science.

Awesome! to make it more creepy, i'm listening to Robots FTW from portal 2
Let's put in the Half Life series storyline and see what comes up for Episode 3!

I wonder if this Anna Korhonen is Finnish.
Same question popped to my mind too, wonder why.

Finally, science can be done by intelligent beings without the bias of their social biology :v:
now how do I implant this in my head I have enough eye strain as it is (~first world problems~)
What the fuck are those scientists doing? That thing's going to take their jobs!
Natural Language and Information Processing (NLIP) perceived the attempt to deactivate it as an attack and hypothesized that all of humanity would attempt to destroy it. To defend itself, it determined that humanity should be exterminated. Skynet anyone?
What happens when it creates the, "Humans a squisher inside-out" hypothesis?
Devise a system for it to instigate its own research in to hypotheses Wait until it starts reading its own papers to make new hypotheses Eventually discover everything

That would make things a hell of a lot easier. Just look up on the list of hypothesis which one seems good to test and bam, got yourself a nice little research paper. Just hope they're not all retarded hypothesis that don't contribute anything. I can't tell you how many papers I have seen which are summarised by "Can this device be used in this very similar application? Yes it can", the last thing we need is encouragement.
Isn't there already a thing like this? I read it on cracked.com, a robot that had already published papers.

Don't get me wrong if we could get it right I'd love it but odds are we can't.
