South Korea might ban gaming after midnight for children under 16.
South Korea's government is close to adopting a "Cinderella" law to ban youngsters from playing online games past midnight amid growing concerns about Internet addiction, officials said Thursday.
A bill to be submitted to parliament as early as this month will require South Korean online game companies to cut off services at midnight for users registered as younger than 16, the culture and family ministries said.
"The thing about online games is, once you are in it, it is extremely hard to get out of it, especially if you are a young kid," Jo Rin, a ministry official in charge of the law, told AFP.
"A lot of kids play games all night long and have trouble studying at school and going about their normal lives during daytime. We believe the law is necessary to ensure their health and a right to sleep."
The online services would resume at six the following morning, he said, adding there would be a year-long waiting period until the law takes effect so that companies can prepare for it.
The government is also considering requiring companies to limit young users' access to online games to a maximum number of hours a week or a day if parents request this, said Jo.
South Korea is one of the world's most wired societies, but there have been sporadic reports of deaths related to Internet game addiction.
Last month a 15-year-old South Korean boy committed suicide after killing his mother for scolding him over playing computer games too much.
In February a 32-year-old man died after reportedly playing for five days with few breaks.
A month later police arrested a couple accused of leaving their baby daughter to starve to death while they raised a "virtual" child on the Internet. The baby had long been malnourished, an autopsy showed.
The government, which estimates that South Korea has about two million web addicts, is already launching one campaign to combat the affliction.
From next year, it will offer free software to people at risk, to limit the time they spend on the web.

Well, wow.
For those saying you can just sign up with a fake age, you have to submit your KSSN when you sign up to an online game which is basically your social security number.
Starcraft
Oshi- good.
But what about Starcraft?
I remember reading about this months ago ...
Well, I can't say that this is actually a bad thing.
that's a good thing
kids shouldn't be up after midnight anyways
I was pretty sure they already had some kind of limitations in place. Wouldn't be surprising.

At the age of 16 you are far from a kid.
Age ain't nothin' but a number.

You might think you are.
But you really aren't. At the age of 16 you are nowhere close to being an independent adult.
And truth be told, I have no idea how I've managed to figure that out, since I'm 17, I have absolutely no personal experience in the field of being an independent adult.

Most mmos are still pretty addicting to most people.
Hurray for violation of human rights.
The point is you've gone through most of school by the time you're 16, I actually don't have a lot of problems with this, I'm just wondering how they can possibly enforce this efficiently.
They should do this in england where every kid on xbox is a loud mouth chavvy prick.
Well okay.....what time would they be allowed back on? 1:00 AM? 5:30 AM? 9:00 AM? 12:01 AM?
I don't really appose this because teens need sleep. I mean the only thing is that I think it's okay for teens to game past 12 AM on the weekends, but if it's a schoolnight then it's a better idea not to. But really, this should probably only be applied for schoolnights in my opinion.

So if you're not an adult you're a kid? Of course.

Well that's their fault for being dumb, you can't police something like this.

This is so stupid, it's something I would expect to come from the USA, not SK. Parents should be the ones who are controlling and monitoring their kids behaviour and attitude towards these kind of things, not the government.

6.00 according to the article.
:ninja:
This should be up to the parents. But I agree, internet addiction (gaming addiction for that matter) is a serious thing.

it's still not healthy for you
if you feel like you have to play longer than midnight then you've been playing too much
I mean I can see this being a very reasonable request in SK. Look at the gaming culture there, they have some of the best internet connections. They have a over abundance of internet/gaming cafes/PC bangs. In past articles people have passed out and died from playing video games - He sat and played for over 80+ hours before this person died. Internet and gaming addiction is a serious problem there, it doesn't mean they're bad people. It's just a problem that they have. Also put in mind they do A LOT more professional gaming. Most of it is unheard of, but it is a big market - hell they even have a fucking channel dedicated to it, it shows nothing but tournaments.. They also spend at least 3 times more money on video games then the entire us population. It is a massive market, something like this can help the population as a whole. If these kids are banned from playing after midnight they'll go to sleep so they can go to school or work without any problems. Something like this is no different then something like a blue laws in the us.

How would you like to pay for a game but then be restricted from playing it when you want to?
The rest of the world should do this.
THE REST OF THE WORLD SHOULD DO THIS
NO MORE KIDS MIC SPAMMING AT NIGHT WHEN I PLAY
FOR FUCKS SAKE DO THIS PLEASE, I WANT ADULT GAMING AT NIGHT!
Since this is only for online games I can really support this.
Good

What if the kid has a job and he gets home from work at 10PM on a Friday and wants to play some video games

That depends on what time you wake up at, if you go to bed at 2:00am and get up at 10:00am, I'd say that's a perfectly healthy amount of sleep.
i would be very angry if a law got passed here, i can remember staying up past midnight to play games since 12

I wouldn't care because I don't play past midnight
