THREAD IS OVER NO ONE WANTS TO HELP ME OUT
Thread title; I need a new video card. Something that's going to run just about any game near or completely maxed, and a power supply to support it (Mine is currently just barely running my 9600gt)
I don't really have a budget, but it needs to be under around 300 bucks, the cheaper the better.
I also REQUIRE AN NVIDIA CARD (Due to Source SDK/Hammer issues, fucked text)
Current specs:
nVidia 9600gt 512vram
Quad core Q6600 @ 2.4 ghz per core
3070mb of RAM
Current power supply is rated at 500W, but it only puts out around 403W
If you need any other specs just say so
So FP, can you help a guy out?
HD4890
why do you need a nvidia card
You could get a GTX 275 for like 30 bucks more

ATI cards don't work well with hammer editor in source SDK.
It scrambles the text, I'd post a screenshot. 30 bucks won't make much a difference.

NVidia cards, max price 250, sorted by # of reviews..
might narrow it down?

Or if you're not interested in sub-$100 cards at all:

I think it's safe to say the 9800 and 260 are the popular choices in that general range

Radeon 5850.
You don't NEED Nvidia. There's workarounds everything.

There are fixes if you install I think ATI Tray tools and turn something off, there was a thread on the steampowered forums. Honestly, I've gotten so used to it that I don't notice it anymore.

I'm working on a map for a server right now, I can't just swap to fugly text.
Im pretty sure there is a fix for the text problem, ill see if I can find it.
[editline]lol[/editline]
You have to enable "alternate pixel center" in the ATI tray tools.
Also if you dont mind an ATI card now, the 5850 will not dissapoint you.

If you're gonna say that you really should post comparison shots of an nVidia Vs. ATI.
Because right now, that sounds like complete bull shit.
ATI = nVidia.
nVidia = ATI.
Why do people not understand that?

It works, but it is the text completely normal? I have a 4870 and I can clearly see (not) that the text is pixelated.

The fuck are you talking about? I've got a Ati HD 4670 and hammer's just fine.
Depends on the Power Supply, what brand is it?
Get a Radeon 5850.
Or buy two 4770s and crossfire them.
run just about any game near or completely maxed

around 300
That'll work on a 500w power supply that only puts out 400w?
