Not a surprise. The game itself is free and the Pokemon brand was really only licensed out to Niantic, at least to my understanding. On top of that, what goes up must come down. We will probably see their stocks slowly decrease over the next few months or so, especially because, as usaokay has said, the goal of the game is mostly only to catch them all, unlike the main series, so people will get bored of it relatively quickly. I am open to counter-arguments though.
I don't think the game has a long lasting appeal since the main goal is to catch em all. There's the appeal of catching a number of Pokemon to make it evolve, but it feels more monotonous to work towards rather than being fully rewarding.
In the handheld console games, the goal was simply not only to "catch em all", but to venture on a quest to beat about a required number of gyms, git gud, and stop some bad guys. Unless if I somehow stop the Crips from taking control of the Southern Seaboard by engaging them in a epic Pokemon battle, then I don't think Pokemon Go is for me.
There are plans to add trading and 1 on 1 pvp.

I'm told that niantic are still working on decent new additions as well.
Like they made a lot of new additions to ingress over the years, and with events (XM Anomalies) are still on the drawing board for pokemongo
I think it should've been clear to everyone that a single mobile game (that Nintendo didn't even develop) shouldn't double Nintendo's value. Nintendo hasn't - to my mind - shown that they "get" mobile yet. Maybe they will, but either way the uptick over PGo was stupid.

That doesn't mean Nintendo's IP didn't get more valuable.

And, most importantly, they didn't actually develop or publish the game.

Why don't they try to recreate that feel?
They could have a system of gyms like in the games that you must beat, scattered over a wide area.

It certainly did (I probably should've specified "giant uptick") , but honestly I think it's pretty amazing that Nintendo hasn't simply given people what they want already - Pokemon games on their smartphone. Start with the classic ones, see how it goes. I know they don't want to eat into their 3DS sales, but really that's a shrinking market already.

That's what I meant with "they haven't shown that they "get" mobile yet" - Pokemon may very well be an incredibly valuable IP on mobile, but Nintendo is releasing stuff like Miimoto. I don't think the Nintendo share warrants a boost before they can show that they can (or really, it should be "willing to") succeed in mobile. And of course the NX needs to be at least an Xbone-tier success as well, but that's something entirely different.
It would surprise me if the later gens weren't added, otherwise this will be dead in a couple of months.
At least most of the server problems have been fixed.
I don't think anybody with a basic knowledge of economics wouldn't have seen this coming. It's still a huge increase for Nintendo right now, depending on where it stops dropping again, and there's absolutely no doubt that PoGo is a massive success. Hopefully this makes Nintendo bring content updates to the game in the future (adding the other generations of pokemon please?)

They are not the ones developing it. They have shares in Pokemon Company that licensed Pokemon to the actual devs and that is basically it.
The game needs more features if they want it to last more than a few months. I've played it for only a couple of days and I'm already starting to get bored. There's only so much fun you can have catching the same five pokemon over and over again.
I haven't even gotten the chance to try gym battles because everyone who holds a gym is just way too powerful, and I feel that gap might always be too large because there's no way I can keep up with the most hardcore players out there.
Also when winter arrives, this game is going to die here. It happened with Ingress, only a tiny percentage of people are actually willing to go outside to play a mobile game in the cold.
One word as to why Pokemon Go will stop being popular soon.
Winter.
I'll never get sick of BBC using those Pikachu suit parade pictures in all their articles about Pokemon.

People will just play in their cars like they already are. TBH I'd rather play in winter because I won't get hideously sunburned from being out all day and I'll burn more calories from regulating body heat. I mean it gets so cold here that the sidewalk freezes into solid ice and I just wear these (you stretch them over your regular shoes to tell winter to suck it)

playing ingress during the winter was fun as fuck
a big group of us would use a coffee shop as a base of operations and go out downtown and cap a bunch of portals then go back to the coffee shop to warm up before doing it again

Lol I'm waiting until Winter to start playing the game seriously.

Do you have any idea how bad lake effect winter get's in Chicago?!

I don't give two shits if there's a Mewto at McKinley Park, no one is going to go out in that kind of weather, or bother to drive through it later on.
Also before you say kids will still be on it, remember that it's also popular right now because it's currently summer vacation. They'll be too bogged down with homework and other interest to keep up with the fad.

No but I'm pretty sure that specific image is not even from Chicago, it's from a massive storm that kicked up in Switzerland, I think I even remember that shot from a netflix documentary on it v:v:v. Plus those images are massively cherry picked, I mean sure it'll get really bad but it's never going to be that bad all the time because Chicago would completely shut down for the winter we'd definitely hear more about it.
I don't give two shits if there's a Mewto at McKinley Park, no one is going to go out in that kind of weather, or bother to drive through it later on.
I mean not when it's that bad but I'm sure a lot of the time it's fine enough, and not everywhere in the US is going to be hit hard (or at all, even) by winter.
Also before you say kids will still be on it, remember that it's also popular right now because it's currently summer vacation. They'll be too bogged down with homework and other interest to keep up with the fad.
I mean, maybe? It's not like kids stay locked up inside at all times during the school year, I'm sure plenty will still be playing. I don't doubt that they'll be playing less during the school year but they'll still have time to play if they want to. Almost all the people I've met playing here so far have been adults with jobs, and they're still managing.
:snip:
While I agree that the popularity will probably wane during the fall and winter due to kids going back to school and the weather, there exist places other than Chicago. The first half of winter was really mild here last year and it's entirely possible it will be other places this year.

Kids... there are probably more players in their twenties and early thirties playing it who grew up with Pokemon.
