• Animated icons for files and such

Me and a friend was discussing OSes, and then I thought about this: Why isn't animated possible, and if it is, why isn't it used alot more often? Same goes for wallpapers, but he told me that it was possible, but far more complicated than it needs to be... The reason I thought of this is because of the .hack-series use of "ALTIMIT" (A fake OS) where I saw the wallpaper and icons being animated, and I thought "Hey, that would be neat!" So, how can I do this myself?
It is possible. Cursors are just animated icons. It was also in a lot of Microsoft's Longhorn concept videos.
Cursors doesn't help me... I mean animated icons for shortcuts and files in general.. Also, just because it's done before it doesn't mean I know how to do it! Can you please tell me how? Sorry if I sound like a douchebag, I just really need to get some sleep :buddy:
Oh I thought you were asking if it was possible. IconPackager from Starcock might be able to do it, not sure though.

On Vista and windows 7 the start icon is animated. I've extracted it from explorer.exe and modded it before but I'm to lazy to do it now.

Uh... the Start button has been animated since 95. If you mean the glow when you mouse over, that's not in Vista. 7 only. [editline]11:51AM[/editline] One animated icon that definitely should have made it was the gradually filling recycling bin. That sounded so epic. :(

Mouse-over, click events and such.
Mouse-over, click events and such.
Using a different image per state isn't animation. Its fade effect was only adding in 7.

But obviously the OP means that he wants icons to animate on their own, not just on mouse-over. So the kind of animation you guys are arguing about is beside the point.
