Janet Howell (D) thinks that if the government is going to force women to undergo medically unnecessary tests, then it is only fair to apply the same standards to men. Republican lawmakers are pushing for legislation that would require pregnant women to have an ultrasound before terminating their pregnancy. In response, Howell introduced an amendment that would require men to have a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before obtaining erectile dysfunction medication like Viagra. “We need some gender equity here,” she told the Huffington Post. “The Virginia Senate is about to pass a bill that will require a woman to have totally unnecessary medical procedure at their cost and inconvenience. If we’re going to do that to women, why not do that to men?” The Republican-led Senate narrowly rejected her proposed amendment by a 21 to 19 vote. “This is more of a message type of an amendment, so I was pleased to get 19 votes,” Howell said. The bill, which the state Senate will vote on Tuesday, requires all women seeking abortions to have an ultrasound image taken and for them to be given the opportunity to see the ultrasound image or hear the fetal heartbeat. A copy of the ultrasound is required to be placed on the woman’s medical records. The bill also requires women who live less than 100 miles from the medical facility to wait 24 hours after the ultrasound before terminating their pregnancy.

“This is more of a message type of an amendment, so I was pleased to get 19 votes,” Howell said.
Abusing your lawmaker powers to send a message? Are you serious? How is she even allowed to be a politician?
That's a really immature thing to do
So instead of voting against the bill, she decides to act like a child and attempt to say "two can play at that game". That way, if the bill passes, both genders can experience expensive tests! Except the male version is extremely pointless! Hoorah!
god before criticizing her for making a joke of this bill read what the fucking thing is. forcing women to have a ultrasound and making them look at the picture before they can have an abortion? they should make a law that anyone that tries to pass this stupid anti-abortion shit gets a rectal exam too just to make sure it's not a stick up their ass causing them to be such pricks.
Doesn't matter what it was; it's quite an immature tactic to play.
more immature than forcing women to get an ultrasound in a pathetic attempt to guilt trip into not getting an abortion?
more immature than forcing women to get an ultrasound in a pathetic attempt to guilt trip into not getting an abortion?
oh so it boils down to who's the more immature one now? Doesn't matter if everyone involved is immature, because x is more immature than y! :downs:
oh so it boils down to who's the more immature one now? Doesn't matter if everyone involved is immature, because x is more immature than y! :downs:
no it boils down to the original bill is an offensive immature piece of shit legislation and it deserved to be mocked in the way that it has been.
Whats wrong with being immature? That bill is terrible. She made a good point.
She was mocking this ridiculous bill with an equally ridiculous amendment that she wasn't expecting to pass anyways. Shouldn't offend anyone, I personally thought it was a bit funny
more immature than forcing women to get an ultrasound in a pathetic attempt to guilt trip into not getting an abortion?
Ever heard of being the better man? (or woman in this case)
the idea of this bill brings my piss to a boil
Ever heard of being the better man? (or woman in this case)
haha don't worry, in this case she is still the better woman.
the idea of this bill brings my piss to a boil
You should get that checked.
You should get that checked.
Better get it checked sooner than later, because if you wait you might need a rectal probing.
Restoring a little faith in my state. [editline]30th January 2012[/editline] I love how little of Facepunch gets the purpose of this
Abusing your lawmaker powers to send a message? Are you serious? How is she even allowed to be a politician?
Missing the point
Ahaha this is my state, I barely hear news about it

dude.... like..... really lady? That's a great case of abuse of power. PS: for the record I don't agree with the bill either
dude.... like..... really lady? That's a great case of abuse of power.
Abuse of power is mandatory subjection to unwanted medical procedures for any woman seeking an abortion, decided upon by a legislature that is predominantly men
Abuse of power is mandatory subjection to unwanted medical procedures for any woman seeking an abortion, decided upon by a legislature that is predominantly men
I'm not gonna get into my opinion on abortion but the mandatory part forcing a ultrasound is wrong aswell.
I'm not gonna get into my opinion on abortion but the mandatory part forcing a ultrasound is wrong aswell.
but that's the whole point of the bill? yes it's wrong and stupid, she's making a point of this.
Abuse of power is mandatory subjection to unwanted medical procedures for any woman seeking an abortion, decided upon by a legislature that is predominantly men
Both are abuses of power. But she should have voted against it instead of abusing her position to make an immature statement.
Uhm, an ultrasound BEFORE the abortion would allow us to see if she could actually abort the baby or if it was past that point where it becomes murder, I hardly call that an unneeded test.
How about you all go and check out what a fucking ultrasound is, its a far cry from a fucking asshole probing. Ultrasounds are fucking cheap and not that big of a deal so I don't see what the harm in making sure the mother wants to go through with it is.
require men to have a rectal exam and a cardiac stress test before obtaining erectile dysfunction medication like Viagra.
A rectal exam seems a bit over the top, but I can see a cardiac stress test being completely valid.
