• Watching injections Can Boost Pain
For some, the quick prick of a needle at the doctor’s office is no big deal. For others it can be a nightmare. New research suggests that the difference could lie in what you’re looking at. Researchers simulated needle pricks by giving participants a little shock to their hand. As they did that, subjects had to watch three different videos. One was of a needle pricking a hand, another was of a Q-tip touching a hand, and the third was just a hand all by its lonesome self. Subjects who watched the hand being pricked while they were shocked found the pain far more intense than those who watched a Q-tip or nothing at all. The researchers also tried telling patients which one – the needle or the Q-tip – would be more painful. If the patients expected the Q-tip to be worse, they felt worse when watching the Q-tip, and vice versa. The work was published in the journal aptly named Pain. [Marion Höfle et al, Viewing a needle pricking a hand that you perceive as yours enhances unpleasantness of pain] So the next time you’re at the doctor’s office getting ready for a shot, take the advice often offered by mountain climbers: don’t look down.
http://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/episode.cfm?id=watching-shot-can-boost-pain-12-05-26 That's something I can relate to.
How obvious is this!?
no shit
I have no fear of needles. When I go to give blood, hell, I watch them put the 3mm needle in my arm.
Well duh. I get cuts on my skin all the time without noticing and it doesnt hurt till i actually see it.
It wasn't bad until that one day during my blood test the nurse stabbed my tendon.
I like to watch because I don't want it to surprise me.

There are some needles you should never look at
Cool. :v:
I thought this was already known, hence why doctors usually tells kids to look away.
When I had my bottom wisdom teeth removed, I watched needles inject painkillers into my gums, then was calm as hell as the dentist very loudly drilled my 2 wisdom teeth out of the bottom of my jaw. Needles ain't shit. There's only pain if you make pain. Drilling however, now THAT is nerve wrecking.
I never look when I get blood work done, one time I tried and I felt everything. Also reminds me of my uncle who got an xacto blade stuck under his fingernail and didn't notice until later that day.
I'm still anxious around needles, but once you've had one in your mouth, ones on the arm aren't that bad. Still hate them though.
For some reason I almost always pass out when I look :v:
Having it in the hand is nasty. I had to have a drip in once, and the nurse managed to miss the vein twice. It bruised badly. A needle in the arm is barely noticeable to me, however. It seems to help when I'm distracted.
yeah, back in elementary school getting our mandatory needles for Hepatitis and that. I was talking to a teacher Aid while they were readying me for a few seconds, stopped, waited, turned to the nurse to ask when they were going to do it, they already did it. Didn't even feel it.
I can't stand watching other people get pricked, but I can easily stomach seeing a needle in my own arm. If I watch it happen to someone else I tend to feel a little woozy. I think it helps that my mom is an IV nurse and talks about it all the damn time.
I remember crying when I got my first injection. Yeah, go ahead with the rainbows, I BET ALL OF YOU CRIED.
Because of my terrible health earlier in life, I would get blood tests almost daily, I was extremely scared the first few times, then nowadays I just do it like a breeze since I'm so used to it. My dad is piss scared of needles so when he was watching me, he was wondering how I wouldn't even flinch at watching the needle enter my arm.
I used to be terrified of needles, then I had to get a root canal and suddenly injections on your arm just kind of felt a little underwhelming.
I don't mind the pain of a needle, it's the thought of something pointy that make me flinch. The doctor actually prescribed valium for me to cope with the fear.

Couldn't they have injected the test subjects with saline or nothing at all or something Shocking them seems a bit inefficient if the test was supposed to simulate injections
I usually have to look whenever someone puts a needle in me, otherwise I feel like it hurts more. The worst part is when you actually can't look and you have no idea when the needle is coming. Puts me on edge.

I had to get shots for my vacation and I see this grown woman crying about hers [editline]28th May 2012[/editline]
I don't mind the pain of a needle, it's the thought of something pointy that make me flinch.
I have no fear of needles. When I go to give blood, hell, I watch them put the 3mm needle in my arm.
You're a real badass motherfucker
Giving OTHER people shots , an IV, or drawing blood I can do easily. But I don't like to get them myself. A lot of times when I had to give patients shots I'd just strike up a conversation and then give them the shot. They'd have their mind on what we were talking about and not even realize that I had already finished and didn't feel anything. Other people know its coming and as soon as they feel any kind of pressure their arm tightens up and that just makes it worse for them.
Doctor wants you to be mellow so he can rape you
I never go to the doctor without one of my parents though..
doesn't really bother me, I've always watched them put the needle in when I give blood or get immunized
