• Living in Virtual realities. Yay or Nay?

So think like most of the sci-fi books or Matrix In near Future programmers have developed the machine, which allows people to connect to the virtual reality which feels, looks, tastes, sounds and smells like real, but even better. You can eat any possible types of food, create your own cities and houses by just imagining them, fly like superman and know kung-fu. You don't need to wake up to eat or drink, everything is distributed right to you in form of a nutritious porrige. You age slower (Every body functions but the basic ones are temporary frozen). Will you exchange your real life for that Why/Why not? Isn't the pursuit of happiness essentially the goal of every single human being on the planet in some shape or form? So, if you're asking me if I would abandon the physical world to live a life where all my dreams and desires came true and I was content than I'd have to say yes. I probably would.
As for me I would probably leave the physical world It is probably immoral and dumb, but what feels real is real for me
I don't know. I'm really split on that. I like my life here, but if in this "virtual realities" it was controlled, and much like real life, in the sense of right and wrong but with sort of a fantasy side. Like the new show Once upon a Time, that would be kind of cool.

That wouldn't be for me. Thanks to my nature, of over-analyzing and over-thinking, deep down inside I'd know none of it is real. I wouldn't be able to go a day without thinking about it, and I'd end up going mad because of it. It does sound interesting though.
I would not exchange my life for that but I'd be alright with people wanting to.
I wouldn't mind it being there to go to, like a game, but I wouldn't want to live there. Besides, having every thing you want when you want it is boring.

I would do that.
I would visit that, but definetly wont exchange for a full life of VR.
The interest of virtual reality is simply that... An interest. The closest mirror-example of what it might be like is Lucid Dreaming. Virtual reality would bring down the one barrier regarding lucid dreaming which is you only being able to puzzle pieces from previous-experiences, and instead give you a full fledged experience which can show you a mimic of true experiences. I would never trade real life for virtual reality though. I prefer experiencing what we got in the real world. Besides... How the heck can I enjoy a steak in a computer?

If there's an interface of people, then yes Otherwise, no
Nah, I'm more of a moving parts kind of guy. But in all seriousness, it's a nice idea.
Well. As a computer entusiast (Community would call me a nerd) I would actually take this. I mean. I already spend most of my time in a Virtual world, why not make one of my own, where everything is awesome. I could do everything I wanted, it could so realistic. I could eat whatever I wanted and everything. In the future, maybe the world is so fucked up so we would need this, since the outside world is just a big crater
Virtual reality, that way I can kill myself as many times as I want
Somewhat however it got to have multiplayer, othewise solitude will annoy the hell out of people in these VR that wish to go back to reality. To those who watch .hack// shows, imagine just being trapped into those type of worlds, but something much more better then what it displays. I would do this in a heartbeat if it is very good.
If they don't wish to be productive members of society, we can at least show the mercy and kindness of giving them a world that they can be a part of. We will soldier on without them, and be stronger for it.
Virtual reality, that way I can kill myself as many times as I want
-INSERT COIN TO CONTINUE- [editline]24th October 2011[/editline] But in all seriousness, The prospect of a virtual life, one that feels real yet isnt, is (And if not should be) a hot topic in Philosophy. In my opinion there should be a choice whether or not to be interred into the system, but it should always exist in case our real lives are threatened and we have to go into stasis. In that case I completely support Virtual life both as a human choice and a life support system to keep our brains from going to mush from non-interaction.
There are many possibilities that could happen when using VR system. Video Games can be made and played, people can use it for somewhat planning or modelling structures and many other things that could be used when VR hits the market. If we have a choice to permanently get stuck into a VR system, it got to be good first of all, It got to tell me that this is the real world. I wouldn't want to do it a lot, but if time went say 10x faster in it I would do it for a few weeks (real time). Preferable all my favourite games converted into it
If its a reality where I can play games all day and fuck chicks, I wouldn't hesitate.

If you can emulate the real world perfectly then what would make the real world any more real than the virtual world?
I wouldn't, but having a dream or virtual world where you can pretty much do what you want (think Inception, The Matrix, etc.) would be pretty cool. Couldn't resist posting this, really:

If it would be like real life but better, why the hell not. I'd love to be a medieval knight hero fighting dragons and enjoying something more real than a bunch of polygons on a flat screen. If it worked great and had various "worlds", hell yes I'd live in it. Unless I still needed to please my physical body like food or piss, that's an immersion breaker.
I'm not against it, though there are some problems with that. As in, if something goes wrong, who fixes the machines? Other machines? What happens if the power goes out suddenly? Errors do happen you know. Hell yes, preferably in a way that lets me think it's the real world. Living multiple lives, just program it so a life is a bit easier so you don't get stuck in some shithole for seven years of meagre existence until killed off by goiter. Sometimes you could be reborn with all your old memories, sometimes you could start again from a blank slate. I don't see the downside.
I'd love for this to exist, my life is shit currently. The only problem I see is how all of this would be mantained.
