NEW Zealand Prime Minister John Key flagged possible changes to industrial laws on Friday in a last-ditch bid to persuade Hollywood studios to shoot Peter Jackson's 'Hobbit' movies in the country.
As Warner Bros confirmed it was looking at alternative locations, Key said he would look at clarifying industrial legislation at the centre of a dispute between Jackson and the actors' union NZ Equity.
Mr Key said he was hopeful The Hobbit, a two-part prequel to The Lord Of The Rings could still be filmed in New Zealand.
'I don't think we should write off our chances of retaining the movies,' he told national news agency NZPA. 'There's work to be done and the government hasn't given up trying to do its best to secure the movies.'
The row over the US$500 million (S$651 million) project centres on NZ Equity's demand that Jackson allow it to negotiate minimum standards for actors, which the director has refused, saying it would set an unacceptable industry precedent.
Much of the debate hinges on an obscure argument over whether workers on films such as The Hobbit are employees of the production company, which entitles them to minimum benefits, or independent contractors. Mr Key said his conservative government would look at changing the law to clarify that actors were independent contractors if it would ease Warner's fears the production will be plagued by industrial strife
New Zealand is so damn gorgeous. I hope they decide to film there again.
I hope they film it here, New Zealand is beautiful.
normally i'm in favour of unions but if these dicks make us lose the hobbit i'll be unimpressed
New Zealand is pretty.
New Zealand is the only country in the world to have every climate.
New Zealand is a country off the southeast coast of Australia
The Hobbit as a book is so much better than LOTR. So much more heart-warming.
I live in new zeland.

Such a shame the education on spelling and grammar there appears to be terrible.
NZ is a damn beautiful country indeed, but if they are being dicks about filming and stuff then i would say film it elsewhere to teach em a lesson.
All of the Lord of the Rings films were shot there. And the Hobbot is takes place in the same "world" as LotR. It's only logical that it gets shot there as well.
Go for NZ. You're beautiful and deserve to have this film.
New Zealand is a country, which I hear is beautiful.
Damnit, I really want to visit NZ.
They realized they'd lose a ton of money if they didn't film it there.

I did it for the lols.
I have good grammar actually.
Here is a video I found for protests around New Zealand.

Europe is pretty nice too. :frown:

You forgot Slovenia
If they don't film there it simply won't be middle earth.
Europe is pretty nice too. :frown:
Europe is composed of many nations, each having their own geographical uniqueness. New Zealand has all of those geographic things wrapped up into one nice package. Less time and expenses to drive to different places in NZ than all over Europe, where it's crowded and has different laws in different areas to deal with.
Why do we still have unions, again? They slowly kill every industry they touch.

They have their ups and downs. On one hand, they can cripple an industry, but on the other, they keep workers safe from bad management.
Not everyone in New Zealand has bad spelling and grammar...I just manage to suck at both anyway.
Yes, apparently it's very pretty over here. I haven't explored the country much though, so I haven't seen anything really good with my own eyes. (The less populated areas I've seen just have cows, horses, sheep and lots of land.)
If they didn't film it in New Zealand then I would lose quite a bit of zeal for the film.
Actor's union? As if Hollywood actors needed more benefits or cash.
"We demand Voss water at every shooting"
And yes, I know that the laws apply to all actors, but of course they only get around to changing the law when Peter Jackson is directing.
