Hopes of reunification have been raised after talks between Turkish and Greek Cypriots in Geneva this week. But a number of stumbling blocks remain, including whether any Turkish troops would stay in northern Cyprus after reunification. The island's communities have been split since 1974. Key obstacles to a deal include the return of property to tens of thousands of Cypriots who fled their homes in 1974, as well as the presence of troops. Turkey still has 30,000 troops stationed in the island's north, whose presence Greece opposes. On Friday, Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades reiterated a call for all Turkish troops to leave. Greece is thought to have about 1,000 troops stationed on the island. Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci said one side demanding that the other remove its troops would rule out a mutually acceptable solution.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-38609828 Also here's an ethnic map of Cyprus before and after the division: [t]https://i.imgur.com/TNDdM6t.png[/t]
The whole Cyprus-question really makes me question why the west has anything to do with Turkey in the first place.
Well it's about time they thought about reunification, been there a few times and have seen the "border" and been to both Akrotiri and Dhekelia. There is a pretty big salt lake that is clearly visible, alongside a pretty awesome water park near Akrotiri but Dhekelia is a different story. Have to drive for hours through wasteland looking areas and a road which leads up to what I think was a UK base, with a sign instructing not to go any further. You wouldn't think they were the same country. I do wonder if the UK would think about giving back Dhekelia if reunification happened, I reckon Akrotiri would be out of the question due to the large RAF base there and it being a huge link to the middle east and suez canal for us
That conflict looks will never end as Korea division I mean. I hope some day the problem both be settled.
The North doesnt demonize the South, unlike Korea. North has consistently voted for, and worked for, unification.
Is interesting see different opinions, because too many times I hear the north dont working for unification.
Greece is thought to have about 1,000 troops stationed on the island.
What, thousands of high school graduate conscription soldiers not enough? The main excuse Greece maintains for conscription is supposed Turkish aggression, yet these Greeks are outnumbered 30 to 1.
Strategic location to store nuclear weapons that can reach the USSR.
But we can reach the USSR from anywhere on the globe. A Titan II ICBM can hit Moscow from god damn Sydney, if it wanted to.
