Japanese researchers have successfully grown hair on hairless mice by implanting follicles created from stem cells. The procedure is sparking new hopes of a cure for baldness.

A tiny black tuft of hair on a bald mouse’s head is evidence that stem-cell research in Japan could reverse hair loss in humans.
“The bioengineered hair follicle develops the correct structures (and) restored hair cycles,” Dr. Takashi Tsuji reports in the current issue of Nature Communications.
The strands of hair implanted themselves below the skin of the mice, showing it was not only possible to restore the hair follicle, but also to root it in the scalp, the study said.
Tsuji and his organ-regeneration team at Tokyo University Science have managed to “significantly advance the technological development of bioengineered hair follicle regenerative therapy.”
Restoring the nervous system is a critical issue in organ-regeneration work, Tsuji said. The study suggests that transplanting a “bioengineered hair follicle germ” can revive the muscles and nerve fibres associated with hair growth.
Painstaking research began with the bioengineering of various types of hair-follicle germs, which were grafted onto bald mice. The germs carried tiny nylon guides to nudge the growing hairs in the right direction.
Once that proved successful, the team moved on to bioengineering human hair-follicle germs and transplanting them in mice.
The human hairs grew in 21 days with the correct shafts, inner root sheaths and surrounding cells that normal human hair would, the study said.
Further tests proved the human hairs were, indeed, human.
The study is at the “proof-of-concept” stage, meaning the theory works. Scientists will have to do more research to see if it can turn into therapy for baldness.
Seriously, is there any thing stem cells can't do?

WHY ARE WE NOT FUNDING THIS?

your avatar seems to have the answer
That mouse is cute. I want to lick it.
WHY ARE WE NOT FUNDING THIS?
Because people are fucking stupid.
One year later: Balding men around the world rejoice as their hair regrows at an overwhelming rate.

all of this amazing bioengineering technology and we use it to fix male-pattern-baldness and erectile dysfunction.
WHY ARE WE NOT FUNDING THIS?
Because that's the one thing they can't do.

Because dumb people freak out whenever we try to use it for something important.
Wait.
The scientists grew human hair on mice?
What.

We also harvest human insulin from bacteria and pigs.

They've grown ears and dicks on mice, so hair doesn't really surprise me :v:
I'm fucking saved! \:v:/
Thing is, to most people who are bald, it fits them.
And why are scientist working on how to make bald people grow hair again? Is there nothing more productive to focus on?

It was not technically a functional "ear." It was simply a human cartilaginous growth that was molded into the shape of a human ear as a proof-of-concept for things such as facial reconstructive surgeries.

Get the funding needed to actually find out?

Because, you know, all scientists are working on this SINGLE issue and nobody else anywhere is working on anything else.
They're probably working on it because nobody else is. If somebody is already 9 years into the development of cloning large organs or something and nobody's even bothered to fix an admittedly smaller issue, but still one that concerns many people in their day to day lives, why not start doing some work into that?

Also, to top it off, growing hair demonstrates the power of stem cells in an appreciable time scale, whereas growing an organ would take a fuck load longer.
But can this technology be used to aid the unfortunately beardless in their quest for facial hair?

what like women?
Use this to restore my mangled penis foreskin that was ripped off at birth D:

you know the foreskin can grow back right
i saw it on an episode of penn and teller's bullshit, you can buy like these little weights and shit to hang from your dong and the foreskin will actually grow back

Going bald can severely damage your mental health.
WHY ARE WE NOT FUNDING THIS?
Because people would rather just throw away aborted fetuses then use them for something good.
And they don't understand that you can make stem cells in labs now.
How long until I can buy a stem cell viking beard?

No. We used to harvest it from pigs, but it was bad quality insulin and the pigs couldn't supply enough.
Then, we took some bacteria, cut open their plasmid(contains their DNA), put in our DNA for making insulin and put it back in the bacteria. The plasmid multiplies and the bacteria multiply too. The bacteria then start making insulin, just like the human cells in the liver(?) would, except they're outside of the body. Insulin gets harvested and injected into humans. High quality human insulin and there's pretty much an infinite supply.

what do you mean 'no', that's exactly what I said but in more words.

but i don't have that kind of patience
