The fact that the atmosphere and setting is so bare bones is a little concerning. To me, that was one of the major draws of Alpha Centauri.
Maybe it has to do with Brian Reynolds leaving, but it sounds like they didn't put in nearly as much effort into creating an engaging "Future of mankind" story.
