Story still developing. News just broke on Cuban TV [t]http://i.imgur.com/mxaaEri.jpg[/t]
Cuba's former president Fidel Castro, one of the world's longest-serving and most iconic leaders, has died aged 90. His younger brother and successor as president Raul Castro announced the news on state television. Castro toppled the government in 1959, introducing a Communist revolution. He defied the US for decades, surviving many assassination plots. His supporters said he had given Cuba back to the people. Critics saw him as a dictator. Throughout the Cold War, Fidel Castro was a thorn in Washington's side. An accomplished tactician on the battlefield, he and his small army of guerrillas overthrew the military leader Fulgencio Batista in 1959 to widespread popular support. Within two years of taking power, he declared the revolution to be Marxist-Leninist in nature and allied the island nation firmly to the Soviet Union. Despite the constant threat of a US invasion as well as the long-standing economic embargo on the island, Castro managed to maintain a communist revolution in a nation just 90 miles (145km) off the coast of Florida. Despised by his critics as much as he was revered by his followers, he maintained his rule through 10 US presidents and survived scores of attempts on his life by the CIA. He established a one-party state, with hundreds of supporters of the Batista government executed. Political opponents have been imprisoned, the independent media suppressed. Thousands of Cubans have fled into exile.
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-38114953 http://www.cnbc.com/2016/11/26/fidel-castro-dead-at-90-cuban-tv.html
Hope he's buried with his trademark cigar, even if he quit smoking ages ago.
Insensitive, but I didn't even know he was still alive.
Didn't he just say goodbye yesterday too? Damn.
RIP you commie motherfucker
What was that saying about things happening in threes? FFS 2016...

The 89-year-old spoke after his brother Raul, 84, was re-elected as head of the Communist party - a position the younger Castro has said he will hold until retiring in 2018.
damn he lasted long, rip
taken too soon
90 is well more than a full life.
Got to admire the guy for how he went. Survived multiple assassination attempts over the course of his lifetime and died of old age. The cheeky fucker.
Insensitive, but I didn't even know he was still alive.
He's like if Nelson Mandela if he was a communist tyrant
taken too soon
He wasn't exactly doing much in his last few years of life, to be fair.
he was one hell of a resilient guy. can't help but be impressed for how long he's lived.
he was one hell of a resilient guy. can't help but be impressed for how long he's lived.
Especially considering the numerous CIA assassination attempts :v:
Survived multiple assassination attempts over the course of his lifetime and died of old age.
"multiple" doesn't even begin to describe it
Got to admire the guy for how he went. Survived multiple assassination attempts over the course of his lifetime and died of old age. The cheeky fucker.
Plus he got to see the Cuban embargo dropped.
No fuckin way. 2016 has been one hell of a ride.
Plus he got to see the Cuban embargo dropped.
Hopefully he didn't die seeing it dropped just to have Trump restart it.
RIP Fidel. hasta la victoria siempre
Especially considering the numerous CIA assassination attempts :v:
from what I read, Fidel is now an in-joke at the CIA
What was that saying about things happening in threes? FFS 2016...
Who are the other two? [editline]26th November 2016[/editline]
from what I read, Fidel is now an in-joke at the CIA
I imagine somewhere in a cubicle at Langely, someone just said "we finally got 'em guys!!" :v:
Who are the other two?
Lemmy and Bowie duh. Rock will never be the same without Castro
Wow, that was sudden. Like I knew he was gonna die eventually but not for a couple more years at least.
Weird to see him go. Always hear so much about the dude. It's like we lost a part of history. Although I ain't too sad seeing as to how he was a Communist dictator and all.
Shock aside and all, I won't shed any tears for him. Cruel bastard can burn in hell for all I care.
Weird to see him go. Always hear so much about the dude. It's like we lost a part of history.
Kinda how it is when any political leader/historical figure dies
Shock aside and all, I won't shed any tears for him. Cruel bastard can burn in hell for all I care.
I see someone didn't enjoy the direct flights from Pearson International.
Crazy, didn't think I'd see this day for awhile
This guy survived 600 assassination attempts. Now he assassinated himself. That'll show 'em.
He did what the CIA never could, he killed Fidel Castro.
