• First time laptop purchase, need advice.

My desktop has become clunky and unwieldy lately, and considering it was middle-of-the-road quality back in 2002 I feel it's time for an upgrade. My parents have said I will need a laptop for college, so I figure purchasing one now would kill two birds with one stone. Here's what I'm looking at: http://www.excaliberpc.com/592178/asus-g51vx-a1-15.6-notebook.html#TabOptions I want a laptop that will be able to play games and run software at least for the next six years at a decent level. I would prefer to avoid going over 2000, but if it makes that much of a difference to cross the line... Well, I'm open to ideas. If anyone would be willing to help me out with some advice, it would be greatly appreciated. I live in the United states, Minnesota specifically. I hope to run games like left 4 dead and team fortress 2 at high with good framerates, and maybe more than that if it can manage. I want it to be able to run heavy computer software, should I go down a programming or otherwise computer related path in college.
Gaming laptops + college is not a practical solution. They are bulky, heavy, feed on batteries like no tomorrow, and tend to overheat. A laptop, no matter what price or spec, will not be able to run games for the next 6 years.
This is the one I got, for similar reasons, and it fucking rules. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152095
How long have you had it, may I ask? I also understand what you said birkett. I guess I was just being painfully optimistic.

I have a laptop that does just fine it isn't a gaming laptop or anything. But I am looking into getting a gaming laptop, because of the specs it would allow me to continue my work (I do a lot of programming and game projects) I enjoy playing games on occasion too. A gaming laptop for college appeals to me because I don't want to drag my desktop around, and I only plan on leaving my laptop in my room. So if you aren't using your computer to take notes in class (I use pen and paper) and you just want a computer that can do everything you want, then a gaming one isn't bad. If this doesn't match your style, then I suggest getting a regular laptop with some battery life. HP makes decent laptops for using and getting simple work done and being able to have a long battery life. Asus makes some decent ones for gaming, although some of their best ones are Best Buy exclusives because they have a deal with them, so it might be 6 months before they become available other places. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9366615&type=product&id=1218092150740 I was looking at this one, it is at best buy, but their prices on computers are somewhat fair, they don't mark them up thus making the price more reasonable. It isn't a quad core or anything, but the rest of the system is pretty good.
How long have you had it, may I ask? I also understand what you said birkett. I guess I was just being painfully optimistic.
I've had it for about a month so far. Everyone seems to complain about the keyboard flexing, but I have no problem with it. It does run a little warm, but nothing a cooling pad can't fix, something I still need to get. Also, it only runs hot on really taxxing games, or if it's super hot outside. Everyone also complains about the touchpad being touched and clicking on stuff accidentally, but if you press function + F3, it toggles it off.
