I honestly don't understand this fad. What makes being the first to like an obscure band so cool?
Everyone always tries to brag about how they were the first to like a band before they were popular. This doesn't make you any more of a fan of them than anyone else, so why get pissed about it?
Why is like popular bands "uncool," it doesn't make sense. Music is music.
"Know ones heard of the bands I listen to." Congratulations asshole, you listen to a band no one listens to.
True. Like a band because you like their music, not because they're from a country that no longer exists anymore.
You're talking about Blakk Mettall.
And that's because Blakk Metall is Kvlt.
:colbert:
(:black101:)
Because you were "right in the first place" and for that one wants recognition. Get it?
Because before a band gets popular is when they are generally at their peak and after every one knows about them people generally see it as selling out. People discover a band and like them so much and want to keep them all to themselves like their own child and they don't want to share it and when mass amounts of people start liking a band it gets the fanbase intermingling with stupid people and gives the band a bad image.
Their music also gets played by everyone, everywhere and becomes trashed and you start to not like the music.
Oh and because some mainstream music is actually crap, eg, Nickleback.
I don't know about anyone else, but I'd personally enjoy to see Scar Symmetry break out into the mainstream.
Though they'd need to get Christian back. Robert and Lars are good, and I enjoy them, but even with the new sound they get combined, Christian was all-around better for the band (in my opinion).
I'd like to see trs-80 get more fans
Everyone thinks that they're unique and shit or different from everyone else but they aren't. It's natural (or at least common) for people to be the Original Gangster. I'm one of the only kids at school that even knows what Ska music is.

I know what Ska is, it's awesome. :buddy:

Fans don't give their band a bad image, the band does. It's kind of like when My Chemical Romance said they weren't an emo band, it was their fans fault they were perceived that way. That was total bullshit, anyone can tell if you listen to their lyrics that they are.
If a band can write good music and convey their messages, they shouldn't be perceived by the type of fans they have, but by the music they write.
Also, what's wrong with a band, "selling out." They're getting paid for something they love to do. "How dare you make money for bringing me happiness!"
Well my idea of selling out is more of just makeing shittiy music just to get some cash out of if. If there makeing millions good for them, just keep makeing good music. If a band can keep its image and be loyal to its fan then I belive then that band is the same band before they got famouse.

The thing most people see wrong with "selling out" is that it's perceived that the band in question purposely changed their sound to be more mainstream, rather than playing what they enjoy for the passion of it. Fans feel this as basically being kicked out or bitchslapped, with the band in question considering getting money more important than playing music out of love for it and appeasing fans for it.
The most common example, of course, are Metallica. When they played Thrash Metal, their fans loved them for it; they were a thrash metal band. When the Black album comes around, or Load, the thrash is eerily missing, replaced by a more mainstream sound. "Where did our thrashy band go?" The fans cry out, then accuse Metallica of selling themselves away for money, rather than playing the music they truly love and appeasing the fans they just alienated.
Personally, I think it's a bunch of hogwash. There are a few bands pressured into playing music they don't necessarily enjoy playing by their label, but for the most part, if a band changes their sound, it's because they want to. If they get more money for it, hey, cool.
Though I do wonder why Kreator changed their sound so radically in the nineties... It certainly wasn't for the money, I'll tell you that right now. :v:

Because usually a band that isn't mainstream puts more potential and sweat into recording their album.
This isn't always the case though.
Because you'll like an unpopular band because of the sound of their music, some more people will, then at a certain point it becomes "scene" to like that particular band and you get a bunch of twink dickheads with pink lens-less glasses "liking" the band because other people like the band. You ask them what song they like and it's the most popular song, and the only one the person knows.
:fuckoff:
I haven't had this problem with this fad but the reason for why you listen to a non-mainstream band is probably because you wanna have your own style, not be like everyone else and because the popular bands/music gets played over and over everywhere and it gets kinda repetive.
I was the first to question why everyone has to be the first to like something.
I was the first to question why everyone has to be the first to like something.
I see what you did there you crafty little man.
The reason that it's cool to be first to like a band is because so many annoying ass posers become obsessed with that band, so it ends up becoming a situation in which you don't want anything to do with those faggots. I usually don't care a whole lot about it though, just knowing that I'm a true fan is enough for me.
What really sucks is when a band gets so huge that their music becomes so bland and they begin to play for the money, not to make good music (which generally happens to a lot of groups i.e. Pearl Jam, Bob Dylan, etc.)
Because before a band gets popular is when they are generally at their peak and after every one knows about them people generally see it as selling out. Well then people should get it into their heads that a band's fans have nothing to do with its music. I guarantee that no matter what sort of music you listen to there are complete retards who love it just as much as you do and have shitty reasons for liking it and are generally shitty people. But who the fuck cares?
Just listen to music.
Edit:
And another thing! Everyone likes music for different reasons and people should just stop stereotyping people based off of what bands they like.
For example, I love System of a Down. I realize that most SOAD fans are complete morons, in fact I'm pretty sure that most of the band members of SOAD are complete morons (they believe all kinds of crazy shit about government conspiracies), I flat out disagree with some of SOAD song's messages (e.g. Science), they have some songs that I absolutely hate (such as 36 and Fuck the System), but I like their sound, the leader singer has a cool voice, they give a lot of their songs a cool middle-eastern vibe that I like.
Let's all collectively stop saying "_____ is a shitty band" and start saying "I don't like _____".

Exactly.
Unfortunately, people are always going to feel that their opinion somehow has more validity than others.

Thinking Ska is underground or is even good is funny.
Ska is good.

You are acting like I am one of the people who have to be the first to like something. Where did I say I was like that?
My post was just answering the OP's question, I wasn't referring to myself.
I always believed people started listening to a little-known band because they wanted to be a "true fan" for when they go big.
I always believed people started listening to a little-known band because they wanted to be a "true fan" for when they go big.
I listen to little-known bands because I've already listened to the more well-known ones. And I want more music.
:v:
Here's my list of bands I need to listen to extensively, as of right now, hand-picked from Encyclopaedia Metallum, after listening to a few of their songs with lyrics and determining whether I should look more into them:
Souldrainer
Ananta
Amarna Sky
NahemaH
D Creation
Universum
As Memory Dies
Crystalic
Eucharist
DNO (Do Not Open)
Fragile Art
Hieronymus Bosch
Hyperborea
[editline]Fish[/editline]
Holy shit. Universum has Christian Alvestam doing vocals on their second album. :iia:

Of that list I have listened to Hieronymus Bosch and they are pretty badass.

For some reason I expected Hieronymus Bosch to be the first band out of the list to be mentioned, and I don't know why. I just found them yesterday.
Need to go listen to them some more, but I need to get down to them first. Checking out As Memory Dies now (in depth, of course).
:c00l:
I was the first one at our high school to thoroughly enjoy Dream Theater. Am I cool yet? Well, I AM cool, just not for that.
