I like Alien as a horror franchise more than I like it as a dumb action franchise, plus after seeing Avatar I have absolutely no doubt that James Cameron no longer knows how to make a decent film

Aliens wasn't a bad film, and you make it sound like Avatar was written to be an emotional masterpiece of story-driven fantastica, and it wasn't. James Cameron wanted to blow people away, and he did. End of story.
Original director? Some say the sequel(s) were better, but the first one started it all.
I don't see how I can be disappointed. I have my collectors addition of the Alien series to the left of my desk.
And anyone who bitches about James Cameron is just bandwagoning on Avatar hate. He did Aliens and it was one of the greatest sci fi movies ever.

Why sequal(s)? I don't think you'd find a person roaming this earth who would say that Alien 3 or Resurrection is better than 1.
Alien 3 was a pretty bad movie and Resurrection was a joke.

ALIEN RESURRECTION is where shit got bad.

it was great visually. If it were a tech demo it'd be a masterpiece.
I couldn't stand much past the visuals, especially the writing. Awful dialogue, predictable battle [sp](initial advantage, enemy gains the upper hand, moment of hopelessness, cavalry, then inexplicable retarded final mechsuit one on one boss fight initiated by cliche "witty" banter)[/sp], etc. If you cant come up with a better name for a material than "unobtainium" then it's clear that you need to let someone else write your movie
Don't get me wrong, I love Aliens and Terminator and Titanic and all the other good Cameron movies. What I meant in that comment was that I much more enjoy the alien in a horror setting

The name unobtanium is a reference to older scifi movies using the same name for some sort of plot relevant magical/superrare substances. Though I agree with you, amazing visuals, shit story.

And she could have still been in the movie as a small cameo.
