Jailhouse Stays Empty Rudy Gets Plenty Baton Stick Gets Shorter Rudy Gets Taller.. Hola, i'm SilverHammer. Today i'll be teaching you about some classy fucking music. The First Wave of Ska (Jamaica): Ska started in Jamaica in the 1950s. It's a combination of many genres, mostly blues and jazz. Ska songs typically include vocals, walking bass, A brass section, and skanking guitar that usually only plays on the offbeat. The BPM is usually kept low compared to today's standards, creating more of a relaxing atmosphere. It's through this atmosphere that the vocals resonate with you a lot better than they would otherwise. Lyrical Content for all three waves touches upon pretty much every topic under the sun. Social issues is a frequent topic for Ska songs. Love is another major topic. Songs about friends, songs about places, songs about times, songs about weed. There's something for everybody. The Second Wave of Ska (Two-Tone): 2-Tone is the second wave of Ska music. After the 1960s, Ska diversified into Rocksteady(Rocksteady later turning into Reggae) and 2-Tone. 2-Tone was pretty similar to the first wave. The instrumentation was kept the same, only intensified. The tempo was quickened a bit and everything had a bit more "bite". This was from the influence of the punk rock scene in Britain merging with the Jamaican Ska being brought into Britain at the time. This wave is labeled as "2-Tone" because most of the Ska bands during this era were signed to 2-Tone Records. Over this course of this time, Ska was making it's way farther into the world. Ska bands started appearing in the US. Leading to... The Third Wave of Ska: The music of the British and Jamaican Ska bands had found it's way into the hands of impressionable American youth. They listened and incorporated it into their own sounds at the time, and so came about the Third Wave of Ska. This is the current wave we're in, and more importantly, the wave to bring Ska into the modern world. All of the diversity in music today has a place somewhere in third-wave Ska. It's such an easily malleable genre at this point that you can do just about anything with it. Distorted guitars are more common place than the previous two waves, as well as more abstract lyrical themes (not to say that third wave ska lyrics aren't blunt. They most certainly can be). California is a major scene for this wave of ska. Bands like Sublime, Reel Big Fish, and Fishbone all hail from California. As a Cali resident, let me tell you, Ska is alive and well out here. The only ska I hear is Streetlight Manifesto. I'm not that big a fan of the genre, but I like their music.
The only ska band I know is the all female Japanese band, OreSkaBand. Probably shit compared the rest of the genre, but I like them.
