I'm having a hard time convincing him not to, his current specs are:
HD4870 1gb
AMD Phenom II
[b]8 gb of ram[/b]
He got it last year, and now for some stupid reason he wants to waste $1500 on a core i7, a motherboard, another 8 gb of ram, and a [highlight]GTX 260[/highlight].
He is only [highlight]13[/highlight] and he uses it for GTA IV, he wants to upgrade because he is one of the unlucky ones whose game runs like shit on a good setup.
Can Facepunch help me convince him to save the money for something more worthwhile?

And even with an X58 mobo, you can run RAM in single-, dual-, or triple-channel.

You don't need 8gb of ram really, 4gb is plenty if you're just doing mainstream gaming.
You really don't need 8GB of RAM. Reduce the amount to 6 gigabytes, it's definitely enough.

Get the Windows 7 64-bit if he really is gonna use that much ram. Don't think you can still get the RC free anymore, so just buy it since he really has that much money waving around
