It's lunchtime, and as I usually do, I'm browsing facepunch. So go ahead and ask this humble ITHDT any questions you'd like about ticketing and dealing with IT related issues within a company.
If you're so inclined, of course.
How much do you earn?
$12 an hour, full benefits, paid holidays.
most fucked up thing you have had to do
most fucked up thing you have had to do
I don't think there's anything really fucked up I've had to do in this job. In truth everyone's pretty damn nice. I've had some runins with coworkers who are completely clueless, but nothing to pull hair out over.
What's the most common problem you deal with?
What's the simplest and hardest thing you had to do to fix a problem?
What's the most common problem you deal with?
Oddly enough, printing. People always have problems with printing. And it's always common fucking sense.
Just earlier this morning I had a coworker in accounting complaining that he was getting an error message saying "Cannot print: Incompatible File Format". When I hopped on his machine he was attempting to print a zip he had attached in an email.

This is why I'll never be in IT help.
What's the simplest and hardest thing you had to do to fix a problem?
Hardest, hands down:
Down in the warehouse a couple of workers were using a 386, I shit you not, for data entry. It was running a really basic spreadsheet program based off of excel, used to enter numbers from power supply test readouts.
I had to figure out what the program did, and set them up with a brand new machine that had a program that could do the same thing. I ended up using an excel macro that would effectively yield the same results, but it took me a couple days to hammer out what the shit the program was doing.
Simplest was dusting out a machine.

I'm 17, and it's a damn fine job.
Why is it, no matter how many times you ask people to e-mail the IT Support address, they always e-mail you directly.
How many times a day to you have to say 'Have you tried turning it off and on again?'
Why is it, no matter how many times you ask people to e-mail the IT Support address, they always e-mail you directly.
The majority of people in the company are pretty good about sending emails to our support address, which runs through our exchange server and creates a ticket in our help desk program.
Otherwise they just call.
How many times a day to you have to say 'Have you tried turning it off and on again?'
Surprisingly, I only say that about twice a week.
This is why I'll never be in IT help.
So you wouldn't do a job where you get paid a decentish amount of money for solving problems you could solve blindfolded using nothing but your feet?

Yeah so do we, but around 20% of the time people forget and e-mail me.
Also my response to all calls for help via the telephone is "I'll come and show you". I can't stand doing phone support.

You don't VNC or RDP?

It beats the hell out of washing dishes (my current employment), but I couldn't stand having to deal with clueless people. Ever since my grandparents tried to get me to teach them how to use the internet over the phone... it's driven me insane.

Understandable :v:
You don't VNC or RDP?
No, they lack that all important human connection.
What company do you work for? You don't have to say the name but is it a large company or a local company?
What company do you work for? You don't have to say the name but is it a large company or a local company?
A large secondary school in the UK (800 machines / 1500 users)
What company do you work for? You don't have to say the name but is it a large company or a local company?
Don't know who you're addressing, but I work for a large, nationwide corporation.
I think I would be quite happy in a job like that really. Hell, if the IT guy at a factory I did a summer job in fucks up even more I could probably take his place, he's a god damned idiot.
"Hey, the only PC in our department isn't working. Wheres the other one you said you were building?"
"I'm still waiting for parts" (about a year after he began building it)
"The PC isn't working again, it just doesn't want to boot"
"Probably the heat" (After looking at it for a few seconds, pressing the power button, then walking off and disappearing for 30 minutes, it wasn't even that hot)
Whats the worst attitude a co-worker has had to you? I hear IT techs tend to be treated like shit as it is suddenly your fault should something go wrong.
Any idiots steal PC parts?

For example, he's a mechanic at a Ford dealership, and part of his job is running the wheel alignment machines. It uses cameras to watch each wheel and a computer does the calculations for adjustments. One wheel wouldn't align, so they assumed it was a problem with the machine. But their IT guy said "Nope, its a problem with the motherboard on the computer", despite the computer itself being fine. Replaced it, still didn't work. Then he replaced the hard drive. Then the RAM. Then the power supply, etc. He basically gave them a whole new computer, piece by piece. Turns out one of cameras on the machines were bad. So then a otherwise $500 repair, turned into a couple thousand. The kicker, he still has a job there. You think an IT guy would get fired after fucking up that badly.
V:v:V
How the COCK did you get that job at 17?
I would kill for any job in the technology field, right now.

Holy shit it's always this for us too.
