I just ordered Ipod touch 16gb 2nd gen and I have a few questions about jailbreaking.

I know what jailbreaking allows me to do, but I have no idea what I should actually do with it, expect installing some games to the iPod. I've heard that Cydia is a good software, but I have no idea what it does. I've tried searching info on it, but I still don't get it. Does is let you modify the interface or what? And if I jailbreak it, can I still use Apple softwares? And is there an alternative software for putting music in to the ipod, because I've heard that iTunes is shit. And how iTunes actually works and why is it so bad? And what is the easiest way to jailbreak an iPod touch? Also, if you want you could recommend me some software and tell my why It's good.
Also, is there a pen (Like in DS) with the iPod? Because it would be a lot easier to play monkey island with it then. :v:
Thanks in advance.
Cydia basically lets you download unsigned apps. With this freedom, you'll find many apps boasting to add features to your iPod, such as status icons at the top of the screen or widgets at the lock screen, or even a theme for your iPod. With this variety comes glitches and slowdowns. Not everything will work, and many things are risky to mess around with. Some things will simply not work while others may brick your iPod forcing you to restore it. Skins also slow down the iPod significantly, but since you ordered the 2nd Gen, it has a fast enough processor to work with skins.
When your iPod is jailbroken, you can still use all Apple software from the AppStore. Some may tell you that jailbreaking voids your warranty permanently, but they're fucking idiots. When you restore with iTunes, everything is cleared and Apple will have no way of knowing. As for an iTunes alternative, there are some apps out there that have support for the iPod Touch, but personally, I like iTunes. It grows on you. As for jailbreaking software, I'll let you google this one. It's easy.
And finally, the iPod's touchscreen works with electricity and requires a large enough surface area to work with. For example, plastic-tipped styluses will never work. Metal-tip styluses with the metal extending from the hand to the screen will not work either, as the surface area needs to be a bit larger. Perhaps there are some styluses out there that work with the iPod Touch, but I never have seen one thus far.
I'll be glad to answer any more questions.

Thanks for the answers.
So, would you recommend that I install Cydia to my iPod? Do I need Cydia to install games? And are there any alternative softwares that are like Cydia?

Some people prefer another program called Icy. It's basically the same as Cydia with the same list of applications, but in a more user-friendly fashion. Think of it as Cydia for Mac users. However, I find it quite unstable and it crashes a lot.
The entire point of jailbreaking is Cydia, pretty much, so I do recommend you install it. I however do not recommend you go on a downloading spree because shit from now on will have consequences. If you have questions about certain apps, feel free to ask.

Do I need internet connection on my iPod in order to install apps, or can I install them with my computer? Because I have a little chance of using wireless connection, mainly because I don't have one at home and it costs money in public places.
If you live in a city or even a town, you usually will find a ton of wireless networks around public areas. If you can connect without having to type a key, it's free for you, not for them. Their fault for not securing their networks.
But yeah, for AppStore, you can use iTunes. For Cydia, you will have to do it using wireless.

So, there's no way for me to download some software (Like games that are not from apple's store) to my computer and intall it to my iPod from my comp or moving the installer to the iPod?
No, there's no way. :frown:
What, yes there is? You can download apps from iTunes then sync them to your iPod.

Read the thread carefully.

Not jailbroken apps.
You can once you've installed Appsync on your iPod.
I jailbroke mainly for emulators and skins.
After jailbraking i was disappointed about the choice of skins. But i could now set my own wallpaper for my springboard. which i love. I was also disappointed that the guy who write the emulators made the NES emulator a pay service.
Overall it was worth it. So i'd recommend you jailbreak.

Aww. shit. So how it happens with the iPod? I go to some site and download games from there? Or what?
Well, don't feel bad. Cydia mostly has things that tweak your experience with your iPod, but it rarely has things that are actually entertaining. For games and entertainment, the AppStore wins hands down, as long as you've got a credit card. Even if you don't, a huge amount of things on the AppStore are free anyway.
So, basically,
Applications to enhance the iPod (Widgets, themes, etc.) = Cydia.
Applications for gaming, entertainment, huge variety = AppStore.
Wait, yes you can, I usually download my cracked apps from here: http://appulo.us/appdb/
Then my iTunes library syncs it with my iPod.

You don't get it.
We're talking about Cydia applications.
Was just about to post cydia.hackulo.us as a good source... :)

Actually I'm talking about every game out there. I mean all the apps out there, not just cydia's.
Oh, christ, fuck it.
If you want to know shit about jailbreaking, google it. There are a billion websites dedicated to that topic.
i use installous to get my hacked apple apps :3
Installous is awesome.
Also, just get it. Jailbreak it. It's totally worth it.

Could you PM me a good link to installous or something? I've tried to search google, but I'm not really sure wich one is the right one.
You need to install it through Cydia, which means you'll need Wi-Fi.
And the source, which isn't in Cydia by default. A quick Google can get you information on the Source.
I just got the iPod. Can anyone tell me how can I add single photos to it? And not the whole folder. It would be a lot easier if I just could drag and drop files to my iPod and not using the sync shit with iTunes...
Also, what's the easiest way to jailbreak?
Redsn0w and the ISPW you will have downloaded if you update your firmware. There are downloads for each released ISPW, just make sure it matches your currently installed version.
In responce to the Itunes thing I highly suggest not using it. The main reason being its so damn expensive. It has a nice clean set up though but the prices are crazy imo. There are cheaper ways about the interwebs for music.

I'm not buying anything from it. I'm just using it to transfer music to my iPod.
I found this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HFEk_nt4ZtM Do you guys think I should jailbreak my iPod by using the instructions on the video? Or is there a better way?
Yes, it works.

Oh, and I believe there's an iTunes alternative called Foobar2000 or something. I never tried it, but I heard that it allows you to drag and drop freely.
