I recently upgraded my brothers GPU to an r9 295x2 and his PSU to a BeQuiet power zone 1000 watt. Ever since the upgrade his system boots for 2 seconds and then there's a click sound which comes from within the PSU and the PC then restarts. Upon the restart after the 2 second boot, sometimes there's video output, sometimes there isn't. It's really weird. Any ideas?
Yeah his previous GTX 670 makes it boot beautifully.
That's the thing.... When you can get it to boot with the r9 295x2 it works just fine. It's just getting it past boot. Really strange, what could itbe? We can push the card to its limits and it's fine, just getting it past boot seems to be tricky.
Okay, so it boots. You get the BIOS screen (POST), and it begins with windows. At that point when it boots windows it restarts?
If thats the case, press F8 right after BIOS, and turn off automatic restart on system failure. Chances are, theres a bluescreen occuring. A 1kW PSU should be able to power that thing (do check the 12V rails, see if enough amperage is coming out of them). If its not getting to the point where it might be starting windows, I would RMA the GPU. But I would assume there may be a problem with the drivers, especially going from nvidia to amd
Did you recently update your driver to Catalyst 14.9? It is said that 14.9 caused problems like this from this article:http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardware/2014/10/03/amd-catalyst-14-9-bugs/1
AMD has confirmed a glitch in its latest Catalyst driver bundle that can cause crashes, hangs and the infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSoD) on Windows machines, but promises a fix is in the works.
Released earlier this week and promising a small number of performance and bug fixes, Catalyst 14.9 is available for Windows and Linux as a free upgrade. Sadly, users of the former operating system are reporting that the new driver bundle is causing crashes, hangs and reboot failures - even extending to a bug that can prevent the Catalyst Control Centre software from loading at all.
I suggest that you boot into safe mode, uninstall the new driver and reinstall Catalyst 14.8 or any older version of Catalysty.
