The Koran will be read from cover to cover on Finnish public radio as part of a new series, it's been announced.
The country's public broadcaster, Yle, has divided the reading into 60 half-hour segments, including a discussion between two experts on the context and meaning of each part. Beginning on 7 March, the project is "intended to increase people's knowledge of the Koran and Muslim culture in Finland", Yle says on its website. A leader from Finland's Muslim community, Imam Anas Hajjar, will discuss each section with Professor Jaakko Hameen-Anttila, who translated the text into Finnish.
thanks but i'll stick to the acdc channel
is anyone going to bother to listening to 60 fucking segments
I know if this had been done in sweden all sorts of closet nazists would come out of their shelves and voice their opinion on how this is the end of all things lovely and the beginning of the apocalypse.
Is it the same way in finland?

same in denmark, especially the danish peoples party would stir shit up immediately for the stupid public to rage in a week or 2
This can only be good. Educating people on what the book actually says can clear up a lot of confusion and get people more interested on the topic. I hope the imam they bring in is as honest as possible when he discusses it.
I'd probably like to listen to the whole thing broadcast like that but I don't have the attention span for it.
Nice to see yle-tax money going to good use
i really cant see anyone finnish listening to the whole fucking koran

He is just going to read a translation of the quran, not comment or debate the content.
Nobody is going to be stirred up about this because no one listens to yle radio channel. It's probably going to be the finnish media that will make this into a bigger deal than it actually is.
Not really such a big deal, it's totally harmless.
That's pretty nice for blind Muslims

He is though?

The source says that two experts will be discussing each part though.
is anyone going to bother to listening to 60 fucking segments
I assume it's going to be on yle puhe which no one listens to anyway

Christian bible discussions are still popular enough to have 2-4 stations everywhere, there's enough people interested
but aren't translated versions of the quran considered illegitimate?
but aren't translated versions of the quran considered illegitimate?
Basically all Qurans are translated, even the ones in arabic aren't written in the same arabic as the original.

2-4? Christ you must live in a lucky state. There are at least 6 on permanently and half of the regular stations turn into gospel and bible stations on Sunday.

What a ridiculously asinine post, they're always going to be broadcasting something, it's not like a huge sum of outside money is going to be going into this

Yeah but i'd rather have them broadcast something that someone would actually listen to.

Do we really need another Top #40 channel though?
Basically all Qurans are translated, even the ones in arabic aren't written in the same arabic as the original.
Arabic Qurans are still considered the only real way to understand it. That's why muslims recite passages in Arabic, even if they don't understand it.

Why would you not want to listen to it, though? Have you read the Quran? Aren't you curious about the contents of a book that fuels religious beliefs held by over a billion people?
I appreciate they want people to be more understanding of what it means to be a Muslim, but how will they handle the verses that talk of cutting the hands of thieves or fighting non-believers, couldn't that quite easily achieve the opposite? I'd be interested to hear what the discussion around that is as well, too bad I don't understand Finnish.
Yeah but i'd rather have them broadcast something that someone would actually listen to.
people listen to it?
Gah who am I kidding, Muslims don't real and no one is going to listen to it
Honestly I'm sick of all the people who are just so against religious text and religion in general, some of the stories they portray are really interesting.
Yeah but i'd rather have them broadcast something that someone would actually listen to.
It's Yle Puhe, it's not like they hijacked Radio Rock to crowbar this stuff in. Something like this would actually fit well with the station's remit.

Are you sure? Maybe there are some modern versions but I'm pretty sure the Classical Arabic "original" is still in use.
