• Stabbing victim forgives mentally ill attacker
TWO men repeatedly stabbed and permanently disabled by mentally ill "clone stabber" Joshua Scalzi have forgiven him, seven years after the attack. Steven Jobson today shook hands with Scalzi on the steps of the Supreme Court, in what Justice Margaret Nyland said was a rare "good outcome" for a criminal case. Their friendly interaction stood in sharp contrast to the events of September 18, 2005, when Scalzi launched a frenzied attack on Mr Jobson and Adam Rayner. He stabbed them in the head, neck and body while affected by paranoid schizophrenic delusions, believing them to be "evil clones" who "had to die to safeguard the world". Their demeanour was also a marked difference from just one month ago, when Mr Jobson and Mr Rayner demanded Scalzi's movements be limited. Victims reconcile with attacker They were angry that Scalzi - who lives in the community under mental health supervision - had repeatedly breached his release conditions by drinking and gambling. Today Susan Abbott, for Mr Jobson and Mr Rayner, said her clients had been "transformed" through one-on-one meetings with Scalzi. She said they had each attended a conference with Scalzi at the Centre for Restorative Justice, which facilitates contact between offenders and victims after sentencing. The conferences aim to provide victims with closure, and an outlet to express their pain, while giving offenders a chance to apologise and express remorse. Victims reconcile with attacker "My clients arrived at their conferences seeing Scalzi as the face of evil... his was the shadow that had haunted their psyches for seven years," she said. "Four hours later, both emerged seeing the humanity in Scalzi, but also having forgiven him absolutely for the events of September 18, 2005. "They genuinely wish him nothing but success and good fortune in the future." Ms Abbott said the men wanted the court to lift restrictions banning Scalzi from approaching or contacting them. Victims reconcile with attacker "If they saw Scalzi in the street, they would be inclined to say hello," she said. "Mr Jobson is here, in fact, sitting next to Scalzi in the public gallery of the court." Kathryn Waite, for Scalzi, said her client was "extremely grateful" for the duo's forgiveness. Pauline Barnett, prosecuting, praised the victims for their courage - a sentiment echoed by Justice Nyland. "I commend Mr Rayner, Mr Jobson and Scalzi for the way in which they have conducted themselves through this recent period of time," she said. "It's not often that we have a reasonably good outcome in this jurisdiction, and it's a comfort to see. "I might say it's so impressive, the success of this conference... I would hope this might be the beginning of more involvement with restorative justice in these matters."
http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/stabbing-victims-forgive-mentally-ill-attacker-joshua-scalzi/story-e6frea6u-1226461596281 Nice to see such a horrible event end nicely.
you and the mentally ill guy in the article should go out for coffees or something, since you're so alike
Not really, since the attacker had this as an excuse.
He stabbed them in the head, neck and body while affected by paranoid schizophrenic delusions, believing them to be "evil clones" who "had to die to safeguard the world".
Nivek is just an asshole.
the tension must have been unbearable just before the meeting
I wonder if, when he was asking for forgiveness, the clone stabber said "Right then, let's cut to chase shall we?"
Love and tolerance!
This phrase reminds me of bad things
