• World's First Vaccine Against Toxic Shock Syndrome in the Works
The vaccine, which has now been found to be safe and effective -- and to have practically no side effects -- in a clinical Phase I trial, and has been tested on 46 young men and women, was developed from a detoxified Staphylococcus toxin. The vaccine is injected into the skin and its effect is similar to that of a tetanus vaccination, says Jilma. "Immunization with such vaccines lasts for five years or more." Once vaccinated, a person develops antibodies, which become active if the germs start to pose a threat. A blood test can show whether someone is short of antibodies. Risk groups could then be preventively vaccinated. "We are well on the way to having a vaccine that prevents this disease. However, it will still take some years before it is in clinical use," explains Eibl. What exactly is toxic shock?
What exactly is toxic shock?
Apparently a rare but life-threatening bacterial infection that causes significant organ damage, which rapidly progresses into organ failure.
What exactly is toxic shock?
It's most commonly caused by women who use tampons.
It's most commonly caused by women who use tampons.
...Caused by? Are you sure your wording is correct here? Perhaps you meant that they are most commonly infected by this disease?
...Caused by? Are you sure your wording is correct here? Perhaps you meant that they are most commonly infected by this disease?
I thought it was at first glance, but looking back... BLAH :v:
...Caused by? Are you sure your wording is correct here? Perhaps you meant that they are most commonly infected by this disease?
I imagine she means caused by women who incorrectly use tampons. Thats one of the common causes, albeit not the only one. It's a bacterial infection, basically, a rather nasty one at that that can do some serious damage if it gets in your blood stream.
What exactly is toxic shock?
It's a major complication of some infections, usually staph infections, that can cause widespread organ damage. It's stereotypically associated with women leaving tampons in for so long that they forget about them, but that's not as common anymore as people think. It can happen after surgeries or open injuries, etc.
"Toxic shock" is definitely one of the cooler sounding names that I've heard for a life threatening medical condition, but it's nothing compared to "cytokine storm".
"I don't care, it is MY choice to decide whether to give my child a life-saving vaccine or not!!!"

Shock defines the state when tissues suffer from hypoxia (not enough oxygen) (the brain is the most sensitive). It may be caused by: hemorrhagic shock (loss of blood), toxic shock (toxins destroy red blood cells or interfere with oxygen exchange), traumatic shock (trauma -> blood loss), etc.
