twin X70s are usually 5-10% better than the X80s of the GPU series, no idea why. I was planning for the longest time to SLI a pair of 570s because i somehow got it in my head that the extra $200 was worth the 10% performance boost above a $450 580.

I can't remember a X70 being better than a X80 at any point. Better value - yeah, but that's a given.
