In a deal announced on Wednesday and valued at $725 million, the National Geographic Society and 21st Century Fox are creating a for-profit joint venture that encompasses the National Geographic Channels cable television group along with National Geographic’s other properties. That includes its magazine and other print publications, studios, digital media, maps, children’s media, travel, licensing and e-commerce.
Fox will own 73 percent of the new venture, called National Geographic Partners, and the National Geographic Society will own 27 percent. The two owners will have equal representation on the board and share governance.
RIP
I can see it now
"Afghanistan: How Would It Be Without the Simpsons"
Is nothing sacred?
Damnit.
half of nat geo's programming has been garbage for years anyway
[editline]9th September 2015[/editline]
it's apparently been a joint venture with Fox from the beginning anyway, which explains why it's trash compared to the magazine and the old syndicated documentaries they used to produce
Both NG and the Discovery Chanels have gone to shit long ago anyway
It's becoming a for-profit for the first time in its 127-year history. Wooooo advertisements
So, does this also affect people who live in Europe greatly aswell?
Fox will probably keep the company at arms length. Let them run it how they want to run it bar a minor restructure to stop it from bleeding money.
Fox did a decent job with Cosmos, which is along the same vein as material from Nat Geo.

I've got some old Nat Geo magazines from 1994 and they've got a bunch of ads in there though

Have you seen a recent one? It's like 70% adds.
Sold to Fox, lol NG has been a fox network sub since they launched the channel.
This is simply making it official.
Whilst the magazine has been pretty impartial, all of their networks have been pretty much Fox staple for quite some time now. I guess some of you guys actually don't pay attention, but they've pretty much been the "cops and alaska and drug inc and borderwars" venue for about 7 years now , and Neil Degrasse Tsyon's "Star Talk" literally the only "science" based show on the entire network anymore, since the cancellation of Brain Games and Nat Geo Wild has been showing reruns of their "rednecks in _______" programming, instead of you know, stuff about animals.
The last time a show on global warming aired on NG was 6 years ago.
I think we can all agree that what we really miss is the Wings channel. They've all gone the way of shitty reality/alternative reality and 20 minutes of ads for every hour
I hope the magazine stays untouched.
Also what's witth the society itself? Still indipendent?

Ads don't mean it's for profit. Printing, paying journalists, paying photographers, paying general staff etc all cost loads of money.
Jesus I hope the magazine doesnt get FOX'd
Do what you want with your shitty tv channels but please not the Magazine.
I've got a pile of Natgeo magazines starting from 2013.

I'm not sure how I should feel about this. Cancel subscription?

Yeah, I was going to say. I thought NatGeo belonged to Fox forever.
