What happens to all the threads that get deleted or locked?

Are they just moved to the drop dead section and stay there forever or do they get removed eventually?

Because they seem to go to the drop dead section and I don't see anything else happening. And what's the point of locking the thread if you don't want anyone to post in when you can just delete it? Why do I care?
