Help. Is there just something wrong with the needle or the motor that spins the hard drive? I cannot afford another hard drive let alone Windows if this thing dies on me. Lots of applications are performing extremely sluggish and crashing more frequently. The sluggish issues are more of a skipping issue, like when sounds are loading in a game it just pauses. Any ideas on what to do? omg hard drive no please don't go
Get your dog to kick it back upright. Then promptly put him outside so he doesn't do it again. [editline]23rd August 2013[/editline] But I think it's probably a needle thing. Does it make clicking noises more often than before?
yes fuck
Try avoid stressing the hard drive until you can afford a new one then transfer all the data. Loading tonnes of shit won't help it a bit and will definitely make it worse over time.
Okay, here's a benchmark. I'd think those huge dips are the same kind of thing I was experiencing in game. A hard drive is supposed to have a somewhat steady speed I'm sure. Not huge pointy drops in speed that occur everywhere. Can you tell anything else about this bench? Those yellow dots are yet to be explained to me. Just my luck, buy a new cpu and gpu and the fucking hard drive gets broken [editline]23rd August 2013[/editline] actually no, I'm certain it isn't supposed to be like that. Here's a functioning drives regular benchmark:
Looks almost like the dips are when the head skips over bad sectors and attempts to find good sectors. Do a S.M.A.R.T. check to see if the hard drive is reporting anything.
doesn't seem to be reporting anything
wtf funion you think this is a fucking joke
Well a clicking hard drive is almost always bad. If you can, I would start backups immediately.
Isn't it obvious? Kick it the other way.
instructions unclear, dick got stuck in disk drive But I let my PC sit off for a while, that seemed to have a positive effect on read/write speeds as they are both almost normal now. I guess we will see.

Those yellow dots are yet to be explained to me.
The reason it does that is because you have a shitty hard drive. Hitachi drives are just IBM drives with a new label, and IBM drives had the nickname "Deathstar" (instead of Deskstar) because they were so notoriously unreliable and shit. The reason the graph is dipping so low is because the drive is having a hard time reading those sectors. It could be from the drive not being formatted properly, or it could mean those sectors are failing. If your drive had a head strike event from being kicked over, Windows probably wouldn't run and any SMART tool would report hundreds or thousands of bad sectors instead of zero. The yellow dots is the response time in milliseconds of that particular spot of the drive. IE. how fast the heads can read/write from that area of the drive (lower being better.)
Here's a functioning drives regular benchmark:
That's a RAID array, not a singular drive.
Drive is working fine now, but thanks for the info.
lol I've got a IBM drive and it's slow as shit. T'was free though so I can't complain. [editline]27th August 2013[/editline] Samsung Magician says it's got a write speed of 25mb/s
Thats why solid state drives are becoming the new thing, but some are still really fucking expensive, I got a 30G one to just try it out was $150 when I first got it. Was awesome while it lasted.
I'd still make a backup if I were you. At least of all your non-replaceable shit.

They're only getting cheaper, I paid $120 for a Samsung 120gb 840 pro last year and it's still going strong. As soon as I can justify spending the money, I'll buy a 256gb+ 840 Pro.
while it lasted.
Not enough space in it to do much of gaming so I'm not using it anymore?
