Building low end computer for mom (check my build)
69 replies, posted
My mom finally decided that she needs to ditch her computer that can barely even run xp, and asked me to look around for parts. My budget is around $300, but I'm hoping to get it as low as I can. The one that I have in my cart has a graphics card in it, but only because the combo deal with the psu makes it pretty much free after rebates, so I might as well make it a little overkill so she has no with performance even though she'll really only be doing some light picture editing, email, internet, and word processing.

Total w\ shipping is $318.33, and there's $43 worth of rebates bringing it to $275.33. It also has a 6' HDMI-HDMI cable included free with one of the parts.
You guys think this is good, or could I do better?
Looks good, but can't she reuse some old parts like HDD, Case, etc.?
Well her case is beaten up to shit, and her HDD is infested with god knows what. I'm going to need another HDD either way because I don't have a means of backing it up, so I was going to get the computer all setup, put her old HDD in, and copy all her files over. Her memory is either DDR1 or sDRAM, either way the mobo won't support it.
Only part that could really be recycled is her optical drive, but it's strictly a cd drive and she wants to upgrade to a DVD drive.
Don't go Celeron, get a Athlon. AMD rocks the bottom.

The hard truth.
Well, cheap.

And IMHO damn good $/performance.
I just think with the 920/930 Intel sealed the enthusiast/high end market.
Oh wow, I didn't even notice that was an Intel. I don't see any Athlons that don't break the budget, what about a sempron?
Or

Oops, didn't account for rebates, don't need to sink down to a sempron, hows that one though?
get this one it's better

You don't get a heatsink for that one it seems.. I'm gonna try and make a build.. 10min.
:ninja:'d
Just get the CPU the above one suggested... Didn't feel like putting a build together.
Total with Ocelots is 306 after rebates, so it doesn't break the budget enough to matter
Semprons are great low end CPUs

this one can unlock to an AMD Athlon II x2
I suggest the i7 980x.. It's a cheap knock-off and it gives good, stable performance... Isn't a good overclocker, but it's fine.
In here the year is 2015.

Performance wise would it be better to shell out the couple bucks more for the Athlon though?

And the 500W psu should be plenty, right?
Overkill, is more like the word.
Would it be smart to just ditch the graphics card and down it to a cheaper psu?
I would say so, unless your mom play games.
Not really, I just know my stepdad pretends he knows everything and he'd baww that I didn't get one because the computer isn't as good without it even though the onboard one is perfectly acceptable for what she needs it for.
I'll just ditch it and tell him to go build himself a computer if he's such a genius, he'll probably end up shorting it because he didn't put the standoffs in.

Would 350W be enough? I'm assuming Rosewill is a good brand, and it's pretty cheap too.

Just make it cheap. Then make him give you money, and make a "Super-high-endgaming-alien-monster-PC", a.k.a 9500GT and such.

This is for my mom because she runs her whole business through email etc basically. I just wanted to avoid him saying shit.
so is that psu good?

FSP makes cooler master PSU's which are pretty good.
I wouldn't trust that rosewill not to die.
Wait, I thought you should avoid Cooler Master :raise:
Which brand is it that has a high failure rate?

Rosewill and Kingwin fail a lot.

Get an Antec Basiq, they have worked well for me in my cheap builds. They are still going strong after 4 years.
In the combo deals for Motherboards+cpu go for the E5 or E6 series
it has a built in graphics card, saving around 20-30$ alone + less work to assemble it

Would the 350w model be good?

Yes.
Guess so... You won't need more. And Cooler MAster makes good PSU's.
Ninja'd. Again.
Well, it's down to $275.
should I stick with that sempron, or go with an Athlon now that I'm under budget? I want to spend the least I can, but would there be a noticable difference between the two?
