• Why does my internet connection shit the bed every twenty minutes
    13 replies, posted
I'm getting sick of it. Every twenty to thirty minutes or so I'll disconnect, only to be back online in a minute or two. It's driving me nuts. What could I possibly do to make my router more consistent?
Get a new one which isn't shit perhaps.
If the router is old it's probably overheating and parts are fried out. My router has similar problems except it only cuts out during PC games or running a server of some kind my router can't handle all the connections it's receiving and just shuts down. I can only suggest buy a new router.
What are some good routers? I don't want to buy another shitty one
Before looking at buying things you need to isolate the problem, having the connection disconnect every 20 minutes is extremely general. You should provide the following information - -Wired or wireless -What ISP -What type of connection (cable or DSL) -Does connection loss occur on every machine on the network or just one -What device is loosing connectivity, does the modem drop the connection or is it the router?
What are some good routers? I don't want to buy another shitty one
I got tired of sorting through shitty routers years ago and ended up building my own out of what started out as a spare PC (which has long since been upgraded to be more powerful, draw less power and run quieter.) It can multipurpose itself as other things as well, like being a web server, sql server, domain controller, game server and many other things. I don't know why I didn't do it sooner.

Perhaps it is overheating? or you need to update the drivers?
google it, there's plenty of guides
what should i be looking for?
Mind explaning HOW you did this?
First, you need a PC with dual NICs (or more if you want different networks or a DMZ interface.) You can use almost any speed of PC for a router, it's just the faster the CPU is, the more traffic it can handle. The slowest PC I've used as a router was a Pentium MMX 200 with 128 MB of RAM. Next, since you probably don't want to make your router manually like the way I did (pick a Linux distro, spend hours configuring DHCP, IPTables and Named and writing a 900 line configuration script, etc.) You'll want to use a Linux distribution specifically designed to turn a PC into a router. There are several distros that can do this, but a few are Smoothwall, IPCop and ClearOS. There's a Wiki page that has a more extensive list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_router_or_firewall_distributions
