YouTube this week begins a test to see if folks will pay to watch movies on its site. The Web's most popular video sharing site Friday will offer five films from the 2009 and 2010 Sundance Film Festival for a fee around $5 . It's a way, YouTube says, to bring more exposure to independent films. But it's also a test to see if viewers will pay for content, YouTube says. YouTube product manager Sara Pollack says the program is a response to the problems facing independent filmmakers. Too many movies are getting produced, with few places to exhibit them. For instance, she says of the 9,000 films shown at Sundance last year, only 53 found some form of distribution."The online audience is getting bigger and bigger, but the ad-supported model doesn't always fit the needs of filmmakers," she saysThe videos will cost in the $5 range to watch -- but Pollack says the exact price will be set by the filmmaker. YouTube will split revenues, but will give the lion's share to the filmmaker, she says. The Sundance Festival opens Friday in Park City, Utah, where YouTube execs will be visiting and networking with filmmakers.
Source: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/technologylive/post/2010/01/youtube-to-begin-charging-to-watch-videos--test/1 Example video featuring renting videos for 7 or so days with options like HD (you can only watch a part of the video unless you rent it:

how is charging money going to bring more exposure to indie films
Ofcourse people will pay to see shitty fucking Vloggers (it will fucking come to that), this is the beginning of operation "Goodbye Youtube".
They have been talking about this for years. As long as its kept to content people actually want to rent (movies) then its a good thing. If anyone and everyone can start charging to watch their videos YouTube will die quickly. Its just Google trying to take on Netflix etc.

Did you even read the article?
The Web's most popular video sharing site Friday will offer five films from the 2009 and 2010 Sundance Film Festival for a fee around $5.

Jan 20, 2010
I thought I had heard this a few times before.
Eh, I don't see this being a problem. At least, as long as they keep it to stuff like movies. .99 cents for HD for a week? Pretty good. Then again, this could spiral out of control. Also, those 53 films that found distribution? Probably the only good ones among 9000 films. I don't know, YouTube is testing waters with this and I'm on the fence about this Wait a moment
2010]
Heh, whoa did I walk into a timewarp?
Jan 20, 2010
the source was just posted just to show people the newly implemented cash system. but good for you spotting that there buddy!!!!
Either it will be another "Friday" or a tidal wave of coders will be working on HD addons.
As long as it YouTube only charges for movies, I see no problem with this. Besides, hasn't YouTube been doing this for a while already? The only difference is that they are renting out content from the Sundance Film Festival.

He's blabbering on and asking you guys to pay 99 cents to watch the rest of his video.
