Little work I did between yesterday and today :D Made in Blender, the free 3D modelling/rigging/skinning/rendering opensource application (check it out) and rendered using Lux Render, the free opensource unbiased render (like vray and maxwell basically but free :D ) Took 2 hours to make, 4 to render. C&C welcome :)
i like it, but it probably should have been poasted in the 3d work thread?
Oh, sorry, I didn't know there was one.. Is it in the same section?
Yeah it should be on page 1 or 2
oh wow I thought you made a real lantern irl good job
i like it, but it probably should have been poasted in the 3d work thread?
it will have a 10% chance that somebody would say anything about it and it would just lay there rotting and not getting the attention it deserves. Anyways very good job on the lantern. Simple shapes though but most of the time the simpler the better!
Wow, that's almost photorealism.
Wow dude thats amazing, and it took you only six hours total to make this, wow thats just epic.
The wood table's texture is a bit hyper-active in my opinion. Otherwise, everything looks good.
Outstanding piece of work, I like this a lot. Only thing I can find wrong with it is the texture on the left lamp, it is a little heavy, thats getting picky tho. This kind of art is not my expertise.
Table is too boxy in my opinion.
The lantern is very nice. The table, not so much. You could have definitely spent more time on the textures and shape. I mean, some of the wood is even cut against the grain (would break really easily if it was real)..
Well yes, I didn't spend too much time on the UVs on the table, most because I was in a bit of hurry. This is the image I did the day before. I usually don't spend too much time trough the entire project, but I work on it until it's ok. Anyway yesterday I had to go in about an hour so all you see in the OP image was done in an hour.
Nice, but kinda griny.
Fuck, I thought it was real until I read "3D work by me" That's the first time that happens. AM I BECOMING OLD? :gonk:
The photorealism is made possible by the renderer. Check out the site, there are awesome pics
Nice, but kinda griny.
You gonna tell me what that means or am I gonna have to look in the dictionary?
You gonna tell me what that means or am I gonna have to look in the dictionary?
Grainy I mean, sorry misspelled it. I personally see grain on top of lamp's metal. It's kinda like noise in bad photos. Might add to realism, but I don't like that.
My good man, you have inspired me to give modeling a go.
Personally, I don't think it's a stereotypical "Chinese Lantern" you see in China town, all this is is a lantern with the Chinese characters for Light and Fire. That doesn't make it bad though.

The more time you let it render the less grain there will be. 4 hours are the minimum for these kind of renders.
Wow, do you know chinese? How did you recognize them? :P you were right!
They're the same Kanji used in Japanese too. I think the lanterns look pretty good, but the texture of the platform they're on seems a little off to me.
Did you make the whole room, or just the table and lamps (and possibly the rings)?
Nice work. Also it's nice to finally see a thread on 3D that isn't "omg look at my first model which is a sphere and a light i'm so cool". As for criticism, I think the table looks to simple, as in the edges are very hard, try to give them a very tiny bevel and maybe change the texture to something not so busy.
IMO this isn't photorealism. For example the complete exclusion of GI
IMO this isn't photorealism. For example the complete exclusion of GI
Global Illumination is meant not to be there, as the scene is only lit by the lantern. [editline]10:59PM[/editline]
Did you make the whole room, or just the table and lamps (and possibly the rings)?
Yes, I made everything in that shot.
Global Illumination is meant not to be there, as the scene is only lit by the lantern.
The point was to give an example of how it is not photorealism. I never said it looked bad or anything.
There's some kind of light film grain in the image that makes it look more like a photo then a render...very convincing. If it wasn't for the inconcistent textures on the wooden thing the lanterns are on I'd be thoroughly convinced this was a photograph.

And yes, I do know Chinese, as I am Chinese, therefore should know Chinese because I am Chinese. wat
