Oculus decided to hide the fact that the Rift ‘sensor’ is a bog-standard webcam. Normally, when you plug a webcam into a USB port, the camera announces itself as a device in the USB video class (uvc), and the host PC then loads the standard uvc camera driver, and the camera works plug&play.
The Rift camera is still a uvc camera, but in the USB descriptor that’s sent to the host when it’s plugged in, the byte that should say ‘video class’ says ‘vendor-specific class.’ That’s why it doesn’t show up as a camera when you plug it into a PC without Oculus’ driver software installed.

Despite its intended purpose, Kreylos shows the Rift sensor can capture a recognizable image of anything or anyone in front of it. This does mean that the device is vulnerable to hackers and malware
80$ for that???
at least the Vive's trackers actually are something new. But 80$ for a cheap webcam? hell naw :v:
Given Facebook's track record with data collection, this is very scary
This is news? I thought everyone knew that the sensors are IR cameras, and that IR cameras can produce grainy black/white photos.
It isn't a "cheap webcam" just because the black/white image looks low quality once most of the visible light spectrum has been filtered out before reaching the camera lens.

Scary scaremongering, perhaps. Imagine the fallout if someone analysed data packets being sent to Facebook containing images of their users? Legally and PR-wise it would be a calamity. Proof before spooks.

Press just finally figured out it's a nice way to scare people for clicks.
i hope the fb interns learn something from my fap technique
Time to start selling Oculus Rift Sensor Caps.
Profit from the scare tactics.
This is a joke but I can very much see this coming.
I guess it wont be long until we can emulate this with a normal webcam.
I mean shit you can already use a fucking Kinect for head tracking while using a PS Eye and move controllers for hand tracking, as jittery as these solutions might be.
Emulation of these sensors and shit was never far off, because companies have already tried to make the tech we need to emulate in years past.

understanding the possibility and potential for abuse is fine, dunno why you are complaining about it
just because you are more educated on it than others doesnt mean other people shouldnt bother learning/spreading the word
his worry about facebook in past is completely justified tho
People act like it never was just a camera? Really?
Basic IR tracking, TrackIR. Really, people didant know the sensor was just a optical cam with an IR filter?
Press just finally figured out it's a nice way to scare people for clicks.
it's the perfect rage clickbait. people hear "oculus, facebook, tracking, webcam" and don't read into it more, they just get angry.
Press just finally figured out it's a nice way to scare people for clicks.
I actually thought this article was pretty fair. It informs readers of a potential security concern that Facebook itself has acknowledged, but doesn't urge people to rush out and change their habits unless they're the kind of person that already takes those precautions.
If anything's sensationalist here, it's this thread.
So much for Oculus's rhetoric about selling there stuff at low profit margins

So you assumed the camera to be nothing but a cheap webcam because a facepunch post told you so?
So you assumed the camera to be nothing but a cheap webcam because a facepunch post told you so?
what? I assumed they'd sell it at a non ridiculous price because that's the model they were pushing
I guess it wont be long until we can emulate this with a normal webcam.
Probably with a PS3 eyetoy
People have been using them for facial tracking to save some cash in sim setups with Opentrack or freetracknoir
Ironic considering we're usually on audiophile levels of buying overpriced shit
-snip-
How about the front-facing Vive camera that actually records color-pictures without having an hardware led?
but it's valve so it's not scary enough for the press to make articles about :buckteeth:

Hopefully without needing bluetooth dongles and candles.
What a bad article.

Hopefully I can get some feedback about mine.
Nothing is cheap in low volume.

the resolution and fov on a PS3 eyetoy barely compares
like, even if you got it to work, the only real application I can see is something that only requires tracking in a small area like cockpit sims. At that point you may as well just use the single sensor that comes with the Rift.
So you assumed the camera to be nothing but a cheap webcam because a facepunch post told you so?
Given that you can convert literally any webcam to an IR camera simply by taking out the IR filter, I'm curious what makes this so expensive.

The brand name
Wtf is with this thread, this should be bannable - this type of ignorance and scaremongering is just absurd.
IR cameras can produce rough grayscale images after post-processing and sometimes, actual hardware modifications? What's next? Being surprised microphones capture audio?
How about the front-facing Vive camera that actually records color-pictures without having an hardware led?
A little while ago someone posted a eurogamer article about someone strapping vive controllers to his knees and the article said it was revolutionary. The very next post was about the vive modules.
The brand name
Have you people looked at webcams recently? This kind of hardware is often $50+, and it doesn't come with a custom case design by Carbon.
Yes, Oculus has a markup on their cameras, but it's not as high as everyone thinks it is. $75 for this kind of hardware isn't remarkably expensive at all.
but it's valve so it's not scary enough for the press to make articles about :buckteeth:
To someone who is not tech savvy, the description of the Oculus sensor is not going to tell them "this can take decent quality black and white photos of me". Vive's camera is called, and marketed as, a camera.
I know the Leap motion uses the same type of camera
it was like 80$-100$ when it first came out
I never even thought about how the rift's camera even worked before but it's disappointing that IR camera's are so expensive
[editline]27th January 2017[/editline]
The leap motion on the other hand sure as fuck is worth maybe 20$ at best, I know that much
The leap motion on the other hand sure as fuck is worth maybe 20$ at best, I know that much
Interestingly, it was lowered to $20 at one point, but then whenever they realized that by strapping them to a phone headset they could make bank off of people who want cheap VR solution, they raised it back up to $90.
