Restart steam.
Verify game cache.
Restart PC
Reinstal Gmod
In that order.
so with the "reinstall Gmod" part, does that mean download all 2gb again? or just backup gmod and then install from there?

Maybe HL2 needs to be active on the same account as Garry's mod is - even though TF2/HL2:DM should work.
even though it says on gmod help that you dont need to own hl2. and also, i used to play it, and it worked fine..
what are you on about, you always need Half life 2 or atleast source SDK to run Gmod.

You don't need HL2.
Just a source game, that gives you the sdk.
oh well maybe somebody can move it. and i have tf2, its source.. and gmod worked when all i had was hl2: dm.. so :P

that's what I already said, you need atleast half life 2 or the source SDK. (and the SDK comes with basically every source game)

@ OP have you tried running it in full-screen?
The next thing i would suggest is re-name the steam folder and re-download just counter strike source and gmod.
If your computer sucks ass try to set the dx level lower and also make sure nothing funky is going on in the start properties, if all else fails then delete the garrysmod folder in steamapps after copying your addons if you want to keep them elsewhere and relaunch gmod, then repaste your addons back and see if it works. That's all I can offer for help.

well actually it is a pretty good computer, so that isnt the problem. i am just running a virus scan now, as i havnt done that in months... and i have already re-downed all of gmod...
also @ combineguru, that was kinda the point of posting it in this thread....
EDIT: 2 mins into the scan and i have 162 items infected roflmao!!!

ok update: after the virus scan, it still doesnt work.... this is REALLY pissing me off now... no ideas anyone?
Try deleting clientregistry.bob in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam
then restart steam.
Not entirely sure what it does but doing that fixed several problems for me before.

Also OP did you change anything with your pc recently or did this just start happening out of the blue.
i dont think i changed anything.. all i did was finish downloading tf2.. it just happened. but i will try it, but make a copy just in case
