When media reports cover gun crime and mass shootings the public is frequently led to question whether the virtual violence in some games motivated real-world tragedies. Just last Friday Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg told listeners of his LBC radio show that games like Grand Theft Auto V, released last week, have a 'corrosive effect' on players' behaviour.
There are fierce debates and little consensus among scientists studying games and violence. Academic and industry researchers do agree that electronic games now constitute a mainstream leisure activity: The average game player nowadays is 30 years old – less than one third of gamers are under the age of 18.
New research conducted by YouGov in cooperation with Dr. Andrew Przybylski, a research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute, sheds new light on what Britons think about games.
what a surprise, people who have no idea what they're talking about think they know what they're talking about
Breaking news: The sky is blue!!!!
I mean, this is kind of obvious, why would gamers think games cause violence when they're the ones who have actually played games?
I don't usually play to break out my anger or frustration..
Nothing new under the sun, yet I did not think that regular gamers would be split on the subject. Interesting.
Isn't that like asking a petrol station owner and three other random people whether or not climate-change is caused by man?
i dont understand these charts
even a lot of the gamers still agree with the video game violence thing just as much so whats this trying to prove
The truth is that video games can cause violence in real life, not in the way 99% of people who say "video games cause shootings" believe however. If the person is sane, the game will have no effects on them. The same can't be said about those who aren't.
The question is dumb. It should say "Video/computer games are a cause of real world violence". The aggression part should be left out altogether. The way it is currently asked would warrant a yes vote out of me, though that betrays my true opinions.
Now, I wonder how many will act with resentment towards "filthy non-gamer plebs" rather than any semblance of wanting to extend an olive branch and educate them.
I like how it's only the demographics with a higher percentage of non-games (older age group, women and non-gamer catagories) really does show that most of those people haven't a clue on what they're talking about.
Pretty much shows this:
"Violent videos games cause real life violence!" - Non-gamer

But the same can be said for any forms of media, be it TV, movies, comic books, and even regular books.
Video games is just like one of those older medias, at first blamed for the cause of violence or crime, but once integrated into society, becomes the norm and no one questions it.

nobody? Maybe stop projecting?
HTH I don't know if you know this but video games haven't been nerd culture exclusives for about oh idk 20 something years.
The average household has at least one gaming machine these days. People who don't play video games at all are a minority.
Its as much as a part of this generations culture as pop music videos are. The only people with that kind of attitude are the kind of cocksuckers who call themselves hardcore gamers or w/e the fuck which is usually a codeword for "i have bad social skills, no or little social standing so I adopt an elitist attitude towards the only activity I'm good at and casuals can go fuck themselves" so who cares what they think
Did they interview any violent people? like ask every criminal "do you think video games cause violence"

really you're still giving too much credit
i'd assume that if the person wasn't sane it would happen eventually even without the "help" of violent video games, wouldn't you?
No shit, and I bet back in the 70s people that didn't listen to metal thought metal caused violence.
Same with rap.
I will always wonder where these fucking morons that think they know about something they have no experience with, come from.
But then if you realize how stupid the average person, then realize over half of people are stupider than that, it suddenly becomes easy to figure out.

Too many, it's like whenever there's a study related to aggression and violence in games and people throw a hissy fit then go on the wonder why people view people who play games as emotionally stunted permavirgin manchildren.

if a person is so insane that a video game can cause them to shoot up a school, something was eventually going to set them off anyway.

It's not that hard really - most people that don't play games don't realise just how many people do play games. Most probably still consider it fairly niche as opposed to it being one of the biggest enterainment sectors these days.
Likewise it's not all that surprising that women and older people have this notion, considering they form a larger group of non=gamers
Surely it does cause some aggression, power cuts, lag, badmins, teamkillers, griefers and afk people all seem to be the main culprits and when unavoidable it can spill into real life at times causing cups, keyboards and mouse to be slammed repeatably into the desk, then when it all works out fine and everybody's playing to have fun it's probably more stress relieving than winning the lottery.
Generally everyone who's playing games is there to have fun though which is the main reason why games aren't the inherent problem of causing violence.

a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing, those who know the least yell the loudest. see: the teaparty

not that surprising actually, a lot of people don't care whatever it causes or not violence, they just don't want(or want it if they don't play it) banned, logic/fact/whatever be damned.
