Paradox is doing a hell of a job with Stellaris. I have a love hate relationship with Stellaris for all the micromanaging you're forced to do, but it's such a great game. I just hope they find a way to multithread it, runs like shit mid to late game.

I came back to Stellaris a couple days ago after dropping it a couple weeks after release (I think a lot of people did that, I heard it had one of the worst drop off rates for a new paradox release?), and I really just forgot how fun this game can be. Anomalies, the story packs, all the different types of governments and situations you can get yourself into- one game I was hunting a sentient garden of Eden, the next I'm chasing down artifacts from a genocidal precursor race. Story is my favorite part of the game, but it also provides fun mechanics for diplomacy and fighting too.
Paradox was the perfect modern developer to tackle a galactic 4X game, and I think Stellaris is one of the best in recent memory. It's at least easy enough for most people to get into without too much of a steep learning curve.

I think because of the politics and the whole galaxy mechanic, it's perfect for two people to coop. Me and my friend have like 150 hours in it working together to conquer and purge. Often we play very different empires. Working together in general in the game feels rewarding. Sometimes one of us is the military force while the other is the economic powerhouse funding their operation.
The new Utopia and Banks update will really make roleplaying more practical. Too often I have this grand plan for my new species and empire but when I end up defaulting to something average when I get to playing it.
And the dropoff makes sense with how the sector AI and grinding is needed as time goes on. Really rough UI and tool mechanics make it tedious to play. Thankfully they've improved a lot of it, but still has a ways to go to before people who aren't diehard fans will stand up to it.
