Aye, I've read the GD rules. Threads about religion don't usually end well. However, if the ITN section is any indication, it seems that much of FP shares my opinions on the things I am about to say. This thread isn't so much about religion itself as it is about religion's misuse. I do not intend to insult or offend anyone, so keep that in mind when reading the following.
I think that a spiritual belief in some greater power is just fine - if it comforts one to believe in a divine power as explanation for the mysteries in the universe, there's nothing wrong with that. But several characters - predominately in the United States of America - have recieved high media coverage because of their campaign against certain minorities. These bigots and fanatics claim that homosexuals and atheists are, for reasons I find completely illogical, malicious.
The old saying "Empty vessels make the most noise" holds true in this case. It's always the idiots who demand the most attention and shoot their mouths off without thinking about anything they say. The face of Christianity as portrayed by the mass media is an ugly one today.
I've always found it incredibly amusing to read articles written by American nationalists about how certain people in third-world countries use religion as a weapon to spread hate and silence all those who oppose them, completely oblivious to the fact that they do precisely the same thing in the States. Take for example the landlord who rented out a billboard on his building, allowing it to be used to carry the name of an atheist social group. He recieved death threats from christians in the area and was forced to tear it down. Take the christians who are pushing for the implementation of creationist theory in science classes, and those who try to get books written by atheists banned. Take the Americans who spread hate-motivated lies about homosexuals in order to alienate them from the rest of society. They demand a right to propagate their hate because they have a right to free speech, while simultaneously moving to take away the freedom of expression of the groups who oppose them.
The United States is supposed to be a free country.
Tell yourself something for long enough, and you'll come to believe it. If a man hates homosexuals but does not want to think of himself as a bigot, he's likely to hide behind his faith. The radical bible-thumpers who quote obscure passages from a book written over a thousand years ago to justify their hate would never admit that the fact that they hate homosexuals stems from a lack of understanding, and really has nothing to do with their bible.
I've met many Christians who understand that people are people - and they've come to earn my respect. I don't dislike all christians.
Whether you're Christian or not, if you truly believe in freedom, then stand by the LGBT community as they fight to protect their rights. Speak out against the bigots and the fools. Fight to pass laws that prohibit hate propaganda in the media, and do all you can to promote mutual tolerance and understanding among all people. You are the only ones with the power to make a difference. Inaction isn't right. The injustice that exists in the system today is causing a lot of suffering, and if you see it, you've got a responsibility to try and stop it.
Do your part to enlighten the people of your country and make it the true land of the free.
If you're not going to reply, at least rate so that I can have an idea of where everyone is at.
inb4 tl;dr
But seriously i feel sorry for some religions because of the stereotypical *insert religion here* that makes a fool of himself on youtube and stuff really reveals the worst of it all turning everything into a real life flame war im talking about the people who do prayers on youtube and the athiests that rant for half an hour as if there getting somewhere.
rather sad really. and kindve offtopic but whatever.
That's not a wall of text. Sure, I'll try and help.
I'm a christian, but I'm no where near extremist. Most may find it hard to believe I am, I'm for gay marriage, abortion, etc. And I don't run around trying to recruit people to Christianity. Most of my friends are Atheists, and they're pretty cool guys.
The whole purpose of life is to reproduce. You can't reproduce with some the same gender as you. We are genetically hard-wired to be attracted to the opposite gender and if you are not, you have a mental disorder.

Okay, fair point. Here's my counter: Are you saying that all straight couples should be FORCED to have children?
And that straight couples who can't have children should be outlawed?
Some people are so closed minded.
I'll do it
Taking all bets now, any and all bets now that this thread will be locked by the 3rd-4th page
Any takers?
As threads like this before have most of the time divulged into a giant trolling flaming fuckall fest.
also,
Who are we to judge just because someone doesn't follow societys sexual standards? Religion has no right to say that these "sinners" are going to go to hell for not conforming to a supposedly strict sexuality rule. Judge a man/woman by their personality, character, and morals, not the color of their skin or sexuality.
My 2 cents.

Even if it is a disorder (I don't believe it is), why should it be outlawed?

You can't avoid the fact that it isn't what humans are supposed to do though. If we all turn gay we'll die out.

Humans have changed this. Biologically, however, this is true.
First page and I'm already feeling the heat of an incoming mass arguement.

You said it was a genetic disorder. Since when are genetic disorders contagious?
My sister is gay, the way homosexuals in the United States are treated is just absurd. My sister does work just like everyone else, but if see ever gets married she will probably be shunned by alot of people. People say it is nothing at all like the civil rights movement, but its just like it. In many states interracial marriage was once illegal, now states are trying to prevent homosexual couples from getting the same benefits as other couples. Extra 25% in taxes because you aren't considered "married" by the state is bullshit.
It is just of like in the movie "Milk", people are saying its not a hate crime when a person is hurt based on their sexuality isn't like based on race or religion, IT IS. Then there are those who says LGBT's should be treated equally, the problem is they aren't being treated equally, and until they do they need protection from those who want to cause them harm.
You said it was a genetic disorder. Since when are genetic disorders contagious?
I didn't say it was genetic, it is a biological disorder.

Eeh, I never really understood contradicting a religion's "rules" and not following them, and still claim you belong to it...
You said it was a genetic disorder. Since when are genetic disorders contagious?
Since the first theory about genes?
The whole purpose of life is to reproduce. You can't reproduce with some the same gender as you. We are genetically hard-wired to be attracted to the opposite gender and if you are not, you have a genetic disorder.
Actually, that's not always true. Lots of animals have been proven to have gay couples aswell, seagulls for example.

I'm talking about contagious like a disease (IE a cold), not genetic inheritance.
Since the first theory about genes?
Sorry, I mean't mental.

It's called being liberal

Oh ok.
Eeh, I never really understood contradicting a religion's "rules" and not following them, and still claim you belong to it...
Since when did gay marriage and abortion contradict "Religions rules".
Religion is a necessity of life.
It ain't true but people need something to believe in.
Okay, fair point. Here's my counter: Are you saying that all straight couples should be FORCED to have children?

That's one thing many people forget about.
"But it takes away the sanctity of marriage".
But wait, they haven't made divorce harder (celebrity marriages that last a month), and they don't have harder penalties for adultery.
"They need a man and a women to raise 'em correctly": Apparently single mothers/fathers are evil as well, and incapable of raising children.
Sorry, I mean't mental.
I know huh seeing two guys walk hand in hand instantly makes you want to suck some dick.
I know huh seeing two guys walk hand in hand instantly makes you want to suck some dick.
Living a life of convenience is essentially the trademark of a secularized society. Meaning just because you have the sexual inhibition of a rabbit, doesn't mean you should go fucking guys.
Since when did gay marriage and abortion contradict "Religions rules".
What I am trying to say is why people claims themselves belonging to a religion (in this case Christianity) and yet have nothing against stuff that are viewed as sins.
I mean instead of saying you're a Christian, why not just say you believe in a higher power of some sort, a transcendent?
